Danny DeVito Joins JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE Sequel As The Rock Formally Welcomes Awkwafina

Danny DeVito will reportedly join Awkwafina in Sony Pictures' Jumanji 3, the sequel to 2017's box office hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has welcomed both to the cast.

Sony Pictures is adding another star to the cast of Jumanji 3. According to Variety, the studio has tapped Danny Devito to join the already star-studded cast for its sequel to 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is technically the third film in the franchise.

“The magic of ‘Jumanji’ is who becomes who. And the idea of Danny DeVito joining our cast was too irresistible and something we knew we wanted to deliver to our audience this upcoming Christmas. Dwanta Claus loves everyone,” star Dwayne Johnson told Variety.

DeVito's character details are still a mystery as the plot of the upcoming film is being kept under wraps. The 74-year-old actor has been quite busy of late, landing roles in two upcoming Disney movies. He will star as ringmaster Max Medici in Tim Burton's live-action Dumbo and will follow that up with a part in The One and Only Ivan. He also continues to appear in the hit FX show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which entered its 13th season this past September.

DeVito is the second big name to join the film, following this week's report that Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina was also in talks to play a "key" and "significant" role in the movie. Although she was reportedly still in talks to star in the film, it seems the deal has been finalized. Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to welcome the 2018 breakout star to the cast while warning her about fellow co-star (and his good friend) Kevin Hart.

DeVito and Awkwafina join original Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, who are all reprising their roles for the sequel.

The 2017 box office hit successfully rebooted the beloved 1995 film that originally starred Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and Bonnie Hunt. The movie modernized the concept of the original film, turning Jumanji into a video game that sucked the players into the digital jungle world where they assumed the roles of the game's avatars portrayed by Johnson, Black, Hart, and Gillan.

Welcome to the Jungle featured quite a few light tie-ins to the 1995 film, suggesting it was more of a soft reboot sequel. The currently untitled Jumanji movie will be a full-fledged sequel to Welcome to the Jungle.

Jumanji 3 is slated to hit theaters December 13, 2019, where it will go up against Disney's Star Wars: Episode IX (December 20). Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle shared a similar fate when it went head-to-head with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and still found incredible success at the box office with a global haul of $961.7 million.

This looks like a much better addition than Awkwafina!...It's been a long time since DeVito has been in any major films...he's pretty much stuck to Everything's Sunny in Philadelphia as of late...I'm looking forward to his addition...

@BritishMonkey - Is it not obvious that he was talking about Movies that have already been released? It's also not too hard to guess that this role in Jumanji might be a little more fun than the one in Dumbo. I don't know sh1t about Dumbo though.

Curious to see who he will play.

I remember him as Louie from Taxi. Like a real life Oscar the Grouch. Him and Judd Hearsh had some fantastic disagreements. Such a great show all round.

This chick choosing AWKWAFINA as her stage name tells you everything you need to know about her...

Aw yeah! More DeVito to the people! The strength of the last Jumanji was that actors were playing against type (like Jack Black being played by a vain teenage girl) but I wonder how the threequel will pan out once that concept grows old

@Kyos - its pretty good, I recommend it. Not as good as the original, but a worthy sequel.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I was a bit sad in the end that I missed it in my favourite cinema. Didn't think much of the idea of making a sequel like that, but it seems they really made it a fun time. Which, I'd say, is all I could want from it.

Well, I suppose this year it'll be Jumanji for me instead of Star Wars.

You know the comments section is a open garbage pit when your commenters are proudly declaring they won’t see movies if they feature actors with weird names. We live in a stupid world full of stupid people, and that’s why there are so many stupid movies. Jumanji 2 wasn’t a smart movie but it was exactly as much fun as the trailer made it look, so if the 3rd one looks good, I’ll see it even if they cast someone with a silly name like “Dwayne The Rock Johnson”.

@xstryker - She chose an obvious attention-getting nickname for herself on purpose. She doesn't then get to control the type of attention it gets her. She made a bold choice to put a particular label on herself and now people are reacting to it. That's how the world works. Not only that, its also exactly what she wanted. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

This will be fun. I have no idea where they'll go with this film. And Stars Wars Ep. 9 will not hurt it's success whatsoever. Disney already [frick]ed that franchise into oblivion.

This chick really named herself after some brand of filtered water? At my age, I can only view what's left of western "culture" as a sad farce. 😁
