It's been a weird year at the box office, with movies both over and underperforming on a regular basis. Luckily for Sony Pictures, Jumanji: The Next Level managed to escape the sequel curse by scoring a better-than-expected $60.1 million at the North American box office over the weekend.

The first movie opened just a week after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and still managed to perform better than expected - but this follow-up has the advantage of debuting in advance of The Rise of Skywalker

Frozen 2 crossed the $1 billion mark this weekend, but that was way behind with $19.2 million. Knives Out, meanwhile, came in third place with $9.3 million. You can read our reviews of both films by clicking HERE and HERE. As for our Jumanji: The Next Level verdict, that can be found HERE.

In a year with a lot of flops - Dark Phoenix, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Men in Black International, and Terminator: Dark Fate, for example - the Jumanji sequel should definitely be viewed as a success thus far. The question is, how much will this movie hurt the "Skywalker Saga" finale over the weekend?

This one was just ok. Tried to get back some of the magic from the last one and I think that's where it failed. Kevin hart was a highlight and the rock of course.

I honestly can't remember too much about the movie other than I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was me since I was really excited because of the last one

Just wondering if Karen Gillan wears those same shorts in this one?

Asking for a friend.

@Feralwookiee - At one point during The Next Level, I literally shook my head just in awe of how gorgeous she is.

Interested see how this goes with the reports last week of it underperforming in China and then coming out a little above expectations here, intriguing to see where it ends up.

But wow was a disaster for Richard Jewell. Yet another underperformer/bomb this past year for WB. What is going on with their marketing over there for everything that isn’t DC. No wonder they are going to 4 DC movies a year at breakneck speed.

Last one wasn't bad. Didn't think it was good either though.
