It's been a weird year at the box office, with movies both over and underperforming on a regular basis. Luckily for Sony Pictures,
Jumanji: The Next Level managed to escape the sequel curse by scoring a better-than-expected $60.1 million at the North American box office over the weekend.
The first movie opened just a week after
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and still managed to perform better than expected - but this follow-up has the advantage of debuting in advance of
The Rise of Skywalker.
Frozen 2 crossed the $1 billion mark this weekend, but that was way behind with $19.2 million.

In a year with a lot of flops -
Dark Phoenix,
Godzilla: King of the Monsters,
Men in Black International, and
Terminator: Dark Fate, for example - the
Jumanji sequel should definitely be viewed as a success thus far. The question is, how much will this movie hurt the "Skywalker Saga" finale over the weekend?
