First of all, the casting for The Hobbit is well underway, so all of this could change the next day.

So, yesterday it was announced that The Hobbit will begin production in February, 2011 for a 2012 release date. Peter Jackson is confirmed as a director and now here are couple of casting news.

It was previously reported that British actor Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins, but then the actor himself said that he is not sure if he will be able to star in the movie since he is working on the new BBC TV show Sherlock. Now, it looks like that they have managed to resolve the scheduling issuses and the actor is set to play that role.

Along Freeman, three new roles have been offered to David Tennant (who was rumored for awhile now), Michael Fassbender (he plays "Magneto" in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class) and Jimmy Nesbitt.

From Deadline:

"Things must be getting close on The Hobbit, because casting buzz is getting strong in Hollywood. Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant."

Andy Serkis and Ian McKellan will probably return for the 3D prequels, so stay tuned for the updates...

Amazing bit of casting. I agree with deadpool, only Sir Ian can fill that gray hat, proper. I'm quite curious to see who the others will be playing. Nesbit would make a decent Thorin.

Hugo Andy and Ian will be back as their roles. They all say that they'd love to some back. In fact Ian's been teasing.

Don't hold your breaths for Martin

@ Triptheorist

Actually, Gandalf wears a BLUE hat in The Hobbit, not a grey one.

Can't see what role he'll be suitable for in the hobbit. I can see him as the Riddler. But not a guy from middle earth.

I really hope that Aragorn ISN'T in this movie. Just adapt the book without going to any of the additional material that Tolkien wrote. Do the book and leave nothing out. Boom. Two movies.

Ian Mcellen said he'd definitely play Gandalf again, he says he loves the role and he should, its [frick]ing Gandalf for god's sake! only thing that sucks is that gandalf is not so badass in the hobbit as he is in the trilogy. Ugh i don't want to wait till 2013 to see the second part of the movie where the action gets amped up esp without he battle of five armies

Maybe david tennants gonna be the doctor who got sucked into the magical book of the hobbit and tells gollum he's just a figment of tolkeins imagination...

@Paulie

I've seen him in a few things. he is a good actor. But I can't see him in the hobbit.

But Matt IS a better Doctor than David.

My guess:
David Tennant - King Thranduil
Michael Fassbender - Bard the Bowman?
Jimmy Nesbitt - One of the Dwarfs or Beorn

David Tennant is a great actor but not for Doctor Who! Watch his other stuff and you'll see. Doctor Who is tired! Anyone thinking the "different" Doctors are all unique are kidding themselves! The ONLY actor to EVER play the Doctor as anything other than "eccentric English teacher" is Christopher Eccleson.

Yeah, I could see that too. I just think Tennant looks kinda elvish and Fassbender has that ruggard look to him (as if hes been living under the shadow of a evil dragon all his life). Althought after thinking about it some more, Nesbit could also be up for the voice of Smaug the Dragon.
