Matthew Goode admits auditioning for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit.

Rumors of delays in production for Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film of The Hobbit hasn't stopped the casting information from tricking in. The latest news comes from an interview between Matthew Goode and The UK Telegraph, where the Watchmen star reveals he is one among what will be many actors to auditioned for the lead role in the film.

From the Telegraph:

"Now he’s a father, Goode doesn’t even like travelling that much. But just before we met, he’d auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film of The Hobbit. If he got the part, he would, he says, find it almost impossible to refuse – despite the fact that it would involve him spending several months in New Zealand."

This is rather surprising considering Goode doesn't fit the profile one would expect for the character (obvious use of CGI aside). Another quote from the Telegraph shows that Goode feels rather the same way:

"As he is the first to admit, he’s not an obvious choice – ‘Look at the size of me for Christ’s sake!’"

In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the role of an aged Bilbo Baggins was played by Ian Holm. The new film series will focus on the character's earlier adventures. So far only Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) are confirmed as being a part of the cast.

Goode's live-action portrayal of Adrien Veidt/Ozymandias was as iconic a role as it gets for many comic fans. Do you believe he is capable of successfully playing this legendary part as well?

Can't really see him play this part. He doesn't remind me of Bilbo at all. Besides, Bilbo only has one accent. lol

Who the [frick] does this [frick] think he [frick]in' is, for [frick] sake? That aside, not really seeing him for the role. I wasn't a big fan of his in Watchmen, actually. Oh well...

Not a huge fan of the guy - he was ok in Watchmen but i cant see him carrying two big movies like The Hobbit by himself! Still a better choice than the likes of Daniel [frick]ing Radcliffe though! :P

Goode gets a bit of stick for his performance but he was actually pretty good. He played Ozy a bit more subdued than many feel he should have but it worked for that movie. The major problem..and I don't know if it was a decision he made or Snyder did..was his accent change just before the final turning point. Bit shit really.

Probably just a rationalization, but you know how people sound when they know like 7 languages fluently? Even their normal accent gets sort of blurred, so that part of Goode's Ozy didn't bother me much. I didn't see where all the fuss about him was coming from, other than that he's a relatively slight frame and build compared to Gibbon's original drawings.

Whoever Del Toro choooses it will end up genius. Even though that guy only has a few films under his belt, I'm fully convinced his best is yet to come. I will probably get some shit for it, but I think Del Toro may end up the next Kubrick. Or that is a misnomer really, because there can never be another Kubrick, but you get the jist.
