The 1983 series Ronin was written my fan favorite comic author Frank Millar and tells the story of an ancient samurai who wakes up in a dystopic, tech-crazy New York City with the chance to finally avenge the death of his master at the hands of a centuries-old demon.

Director Sylvian White has been working on a film adaptation of the graphic novel for some time now; and with his latest film The Losers wrapped up and ready for release, White is focusing more effort on bringing Millar's story to life. Though it doesn't seem like Ronin will his next project, his passion for the film remains strong.

In an interview with MTV NEWS, White divulges more details on his involvement with the adaptation:

"It's literally, truly a cult classic," he said of "Ronin." I just need it to be right. I had to put a stop on it while I was directing 'The Losers,' but now that I'm back here at Warner Bros. I'm on it again, we're sort of going to the next stage.

"It's something I have a very strong passion for — it's very complex material,"
White continued. "I need it to be adapted right. It needs to have the right combination of intellectual ideas and the great action and sci-fi set pieces that it offers — particularly the brilliant production design that Frank Miller has in the comic, which was already groundbreaking at the time and still is today."

Though the project is still in the script development stage, White sees possibilities with the latest movie trend; 3D:

"You never know how long these things take, but we're working on a draft right now. But it's looking good. But you don't want it to be good, you want it to be brilliant.

"Fortunately, a lot of the studios are looking to make the sort of big-budget, 3-D movies nowadays much more than a decade ago,"
he continued. "Now, so many theaters are equipped with that, it seems to be a very good way to bring people into the theaters. That's something that I've been talking about for a while for a few projects, particularly for 'Ronin,' because when you look at the kind of action and the kind of characters he has in the comic, it totally demands a 3-D treatment."

Ronin was an awesome read, I could give a flying rat's ass about 3-D portion. This would be a perfect movie for Zach Snyder, personally I feel he should be the official director for Frank Miller books.

I hated Ronin, maybe I should reread. I think I find the art a little tough on my eyes actually. Maybe it could be realised better on film. And I really wanted to like it!

@ invalesname

i could see people complaining about the art, but you have realize that it came out in the 80's, and that was a very popular style back then. its nostalgic :)

@Corndog- Yeah, I can appreciate that. But theres a lot of stuff from the 80s I do like. I've never been a fan of Miller's art. Though I thought it looked well in stark black and white for the Sin City graphic novels.
I think the art, for me, took away from the story. But I will read it again when I get a chance. Either way, I look forward to seeing in on screen.

invalensname, I see what you mean, I felt the same way when Miller came out DK sequel and the art was just horrible! And I'm happy he got the same colorist, but he ended up going the digital route and well, that was definitely not his strongest medium. The colors were as bland and Rob Liefield's backgrounds, no texture or anything, and speaking of backgrounds, their were none!

But Ronin was the complete opposite of that, had great amount of detail wonderful coloring. It's an acquired taste.

I remember RONIN, great piece of comic work, remember also, buying X-men, new teen titans and daredevil in that lifetime.

Hopefully this won't kick start a frank miller comeback. I find him somewhat overrated. He's too pompous nowadays, he perfected and ruined batman, and he butchered Eisner's greatest work. He hasn't made a lot of individual comics, so his comic reserves will be tapped out soon. I know he's doing a 300 prequel but it seems forced so they can make a film about it, just make one without him involved, who cares. I think a Sin City 2 and 3 is a waste, the first one was amazing and groundbreaking in design(for the time), now better films are perfecting the comic book film genre. Besides, we got a better Millar who's Hollywood's next big thing, Mark Millar.
