We thought this one might have been dead in the water (no pun), but Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) has now confirmed that the Splash reboot we first heard about all the way back in 2016 is moving forward with a new writer.

As far as we know, the gender-switched take on the '80s fantasy comedy movie is still set to star Channing Tatum as the mermaid and Jillian Bell as the woman who falls for him, but Sarah Rothschild (Netflix's Sleepover) will be penning a new draft of the script (Marja-Lewis Ryan wrote an earlier take on the story), so some significant story changes may be made.

Ron Howard's 1984 hit focused on Tom Hanks' character, who discovers that the strange woman (Daryl Hannah) he falls in love with is actually the same mermaid who saved him from drowning as a child.

Splash made the news again back in 2020 when Disney+ altered a couple of rather innocuous shots of Hannah's butt for their cut of the movie. The first awkwardly crops the screen as Hannah's Maddison is jumping over a rail, but the second goes so far as to digitally augment the character's hair so it's long enough to cover her rear end.

What do you guys make of this news? Will you give the new Splash movie a chance? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

I don't really care about the gender swapped version its just lazy writing pretending to be innovative this will just be a sub par remake

@Feralwookiee - Why's that?

Because objectification isn't a thing when it happens to men 🙄

And FYI, I really don't care about showing off an actors sex appeal if they are willing to and it makes sense for the story. It's the double standard I can't stand.

@Origame - There are no double standards! How dare you claim that there are! Race and gender swapping is always for inclusion!

@CorndogBurglar - if I didn't know you already, I'd swear you were being serious.

That's how sad the state of modern politics is.

@Origame - It really is. Inclusion is great. But there are ways to do it. Swapping gender and race isn't it.

It's merman.

"A mermaid is a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. A male mermaid is called a merman."

Is this the one bout the kid who finds out he was a merman on his 16th birth and started growing fins? That was a childhood clasic

Can't say I was a fan of the original, Daryl Hannah was hot as f*ck though.

More pointless gender swapping nonsense.
