THE DARK TOWER Movie Has Hurt The Chances Of Planned TV Adaptation Confirms Showrunner Mike Flanagan

2017's The Dark Tower was a mess, and as Mike Flanagan looks to reboot the Stephen King property for television, he's admitted the disappointing movie has made his job quite a bit harder. Check it out!

The Dark Tower had all the makings of a great movie back in 2017 and was supposed to be the beginning of a new franchise that would play out across the big and small screens. Unfortunately, it was an undeniable mess that not even stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey could save.

Serving as a sequel to the books rather than a direct adaptation (which was actually a pretty neat approach), the movie crashed and burned, causing Hollywood to lose interest in the Stephen King property.

Despite that, filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill HouseDoctor Sleep) remains attached to a streaming series he's hoping to eventually make a reality.

Talking on the Script Apart podcast (via SFFGazette.com), Flanagan admitted the movie has hurt his chances of successfully bringing King's magnum opus back to our screens.

"[My Dark Tower adaptation] couldn't be more different [from the movie]," he explained. "That was the wrong approach to the material, kind've across the board, and it was such the wrong approach that I think it kind've salted the earth for anyone else who wanted to plant something under the Dark Tower banner for who knows how long."

"But that's what we're running into trying to get the show going, is the movie did an enormous amount of damage to the potential [of] getting another iteration up."

"And they were able to overcome it for an Amazon [Studios] series that took another, different approach again - that is very different than the one I am proposing - and that didn't get off the ground," Flanagan added. "So that has also directly impacted...and I'm at Amazon!"

"That's my studio now for television, and I can understand going to them and saying 'Hey, would you like to walk exactly down the same title that you spent all this money on, that you still feel bruised from.' I understand the issues."

Flanagan acquired the rights to King's epic sci-fi fantasy tale last December, so it's still very early days.

He has, however, previously revealed that the first episode's script is done and he anticipates his adaptation running for five seasons. Hopefully, that means we're getting a faithful take on the author's novels that tells this complex, compelling story the right way. We're just going to have to wait and see whether he's able to convince a streamer to take a chance on it.

The Dark Tower doesn't currently have a release date.

This is literally the greatest book series of all time. I [frick]ing love these characters and the story. If you haven’t read it, go get the audiobooks and just listen to it. You will fall in love with Mid World. This is King’s greatest tale EASILY.

This show needs to happen and they need like 7 seasons to do it right. Flanagan is the perfect guy for the job.

@RichardGrayson - I ploughed through all 7 books (paperback not audio), wondering what the great mystery of the Dark Tower would be when they finally reached it, pretty disappointing ending really. The rest is a bit of a blur.

Dada chum.

@Corruptor - damn I’m sad you thought that, I don’t think it could’ve ended any differently. It was all about the journey for me anyways.

@RichardGrayson - is the scale like Lord of the Rings?

@TheSuperMex - bigger- it was about the multiverse before it was cool

@RichardGrayson - interesting. I’ll look into that series.

They just need to wait a few years and that movie will be largely forgotten.

The new D&D movie was green light and seems to be generating positive buzz, regardless of the atrocious movie from 2000.

The Dark Tower series could be really cool if adapted well. The middle books in that series are amazing.

Let the man make the adaptation! He’s a die hard fan and, much like Peter Jackson and Dennis Vellinuvue, may just finally give the fans the on-screen version they have been waiting for.

@19Batman84 - The first four books are fantastic, but then King had his accident and rushed the last 3, the 5th one is alright albeit just a ripoff of Seven Samurai, the 6th is awful with only one shootout scene that I liked, the 7th is equal parts bad and good.

@soberchimera - The ending certainly left something to be desired, but books 2-4 are so amazing I think the series is worth reading regardless.

That Dark Tower movie pissed in the pool, and ruined the water for everyone else.

While we’re at it, I know this is more adult fantasy, and it’s the greatest fantasy series ever… but there are a few fantasy series I read as a kid that deserve tv adaptations:

Cirque Du Freak is [frick]ing insane- truly an epic storyline. If you don’t want to commit to reading the series, read a summary of all the books. It’s crazy.

Charlie Bone - is basically a Harry Potter knockoff but it has mad potential for a tv show

Percy Jackson - obviously. Such a great series and helped build my love for mythology.

@RichardGrayson - Disney + is taking another stab at Percy Jackson. Let’s see if it’s better than the movies we’re. If it does well, I’d welcome the other series in that universe as well. I am a fan of the Kane Chronicles and would love to see that adapted as well.

Just let it die, the last 3 books aren't even that great.

@soberchimera - IMO you’re out of your mind if you really believe that. Best fantasy series ever written. LOTR’s story is amazing but Tolkien’s wordy style doesn’t hold up for me.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 3/17/2023, 10:57 AM
@RichardGrayson - He incorporated lightsabers, golden snitches, and his car accident into the story and he had Susannah grow a white women's legs. It was ridiculous, pretentious, and a farcry from the quality of the first four books. King was basically throwing out ideas like spaghetti on the wall.
JoeInTheBox
JoeInTheBox - 3/17/2023, 11:03 AM
@soberchimera - Counterpoint: Mike Flanagan adapts King really well, in a bad situation. Gerald's Game was considered unadaptable. Doctor Sleep was not a great book, and he was able to satisfy fans of both the book and the movie, which King infamously does not like.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 3/17/2023, 11:10 AM
@JoeInTheBox - There would definitely need to be some alterations made to Wolves of the Calla thru The Dark Tower.
RichardGrayson
RichardGrayson - 3/17/2023, 11:14 AM
@soberchimera - he made all those elements work so well. The Wolves themselves were so cool, I loved every second of it. You’re on a cbm site and you’re not happy with Dr. Doom inspiration in a Stephen King book?!

Also sad to see the other guy didn’t like Dr. Sleep. I devoured that book! Kind of even liked it better than The Shining book in a way. Kubrick’s Shining is the best though- better than the books or other movies in the series

I'm also a Star Wars and Harry Potter fan and didn't like when King ripped those off either, he was doing so well creating his own wild west-inspired mythology from his own universe of books, there was no reason for him to ripoff other franchises.
RichardGrayson
RichardGrayson - 3/17/2023, 12:14 PM
@soberchimera - it’s not a ripoff when it’s a direct reference… they literally acknowledge the similarities in story…

While Idris Elba is a fantastic actor, he was quite possibly one of the most miscast actors for that role.

For one thing, Roland is white, and it's extremely important that he's white because it has a huge impact on one of his companions who is a black racist that hates white people.

Not only that but that movie was a supposed to be a sequel to the books. So having Roland change from a white guy to a black guy made absolutely no sense at all. It would have been like changing Dr Strange into a black person for Multiverse of Madness with no rhyme or reason.
RichardGrayson
RichardGrayson - 3/17/2023, 10:53 AM
@CorndogBurglar - yep it was a horrible miscast. I don’t like Bardem for the role either and he was a popular fan cast.

Viggo Mortensen would be perfect. I like Thomas Jane a lot for Roland as well.

@RichardGrayson - Viggo Mortensen would have been perfect! But I'm thinking he's maybe too old now.
