The Latest GI Joe Review (there are spoilers, if anyone cares right now)

I has been some time since I saw Gi Joe, because I think it's fair to wait some time to write about a movie; otherwise I would be overwhelmed by the anger. Let's see what made me so angry. It contains spoilers, so if you haven't see the film and want to see it soon, stop reading right now.

Oh, you are still there? Then let's say something about movies nowadays:

"There is only one thing worse than going to the cinema with low expectations, and that is see those expectations defrauded". The quote is not mine, but I would add an even worse case: go with low expectation, see how the movie works fine and is even fun, and near the end of the film, see how everything (script, realism, characters..) goes directly to hell itself.

I am not the greatest gi joe fan, but even I knew something about them, I saw the tv series and they were the coolest guys in tv along with Saint Seiya. In retrospect, GI Joe would be quite lame: militarist and children's, but then it had planes, tanks and explosions, so we didn't need any more excuses to see it.

When I heard a Gi Joe movie was in the making, and having seen Transformers the year before, I knew it was going to be bad somehow. Now I know it is bad, and I now also why.

1-Characters: I knew the producers wouldn't loyal to the comics characters, but I had some hope in the comics GI Joe: Reloaded. They were a more realistic portrait of that world, and it had the conections between characters well designed. More important, all of them had a reason to do their job.
In the film, there is almost one thing that hasn't been afected: characters and brand NAMES, because everything else is quite different. The movie introduces some flashbacks to provide references, but they are unsufficient to create at least an illusion of logic inside the plot beneath the current action.

2-The villains: (HUGE SPOILERS) If someone wants a good movie, it has to be a good villain in it. And if you don't explain his origin, at least do it so people see him as absolute evil. But no here, of course. We don't see Destro fighting to regain his family honour, but for greed, and that's not a villain to be remembered. The baroness and cobra commander start being the tipical good american brothers, both happy with their lives and four years later they have become evil terrorists. Fine, everyone can have a bad day, be fined and the next day you want to take over the world to forbid fines; it's acceptable (by movie standards). But we want to know WHY, for God's sake. Moreover, the baroness was the coolest of Cobra because she looked only for her own benefit, she gave more treacherous stabs than anyone and I liked it, and now she's evil because of nanorobots?

3-Story development: Until the Paris scene, I was thinking the movie was going to be all right, even with the acclerator suits (damned sigma 6) but since there, every single aspect of the movie was bad and even worse: it's when we know the load of rubbish of the villains background and that was a huge hit for me. But when we saw that the self-destruct device consists in sinking the ice above the base... ICE FLOATS ALWAYS, AND EVEN MORE IN SALT WATER. Well, there you have all my rage unleashed. If I had written this article the day after I saw the movie, it would be all like that.

And that's all, I hope that if there is a second part, they won't sink any more ice.

i hate this movie as much as the next guy, but i think they explained the villains well, not in continuity to the original, but they had there reasons.
cobra was the little brother who found the key to ruling the world which created his current status...
destro, thought he had the key to ruling the world, and is now under full control of cobra...
baroness is cobras sister whose mind was easily taken over because she was emotionally distraught...
all of it was explained by the nano tech
storm shadow, a mercenary i think, and i know he had bad blood with snake eyes (obviously)

not to say this movie was good in anyway, just i don't think you should attack them for the back story, but for everything else...

Nanotechnology has a vast potential, of course, but its not a godly tech, it has a long road before it reaches mind control. And how does cobra commander to turn evil in less than 10 seconds? He saw the data screen and was completely seduced. Those things have a process.

Anil, I can't even say Snake Eyes saved it, the movie was rough even with him. Though he was the most of the entertainment I had through watching the movie, I can say that thinking about it, yes, it's good for younger audience, but for those who grew up with the originals, and the 80's it was an utter shock to such iconic characters. Of course the casting, acting, CGI, constant flashbacks, and...Rex? Didn't help.

It was alright. The action is what made the movie interesting to me. The acting was bad, the special effects were bad, and the story was held by a thread, but it's that feel of the movie, y'know, that kept me watching. That team action movie feel, that awakens the inner child in you. I liked that each individual Joe had interesting, individual qualities. I liked that they were able to overcome great obstacles as humans, as oppose to the many super humans we see so much in modern cbm. I can see why you guys wouldn't like G.I. Joe, and i don't blame you, It's just that I prefer to see this movie as what it was: Stupid Fun

everyone i saw it with liked the action, but i really didn't like the action at all, i only liked that 2 sec bit where snake eyes dodges the two cars on top of the suv... the accelerator suits were sad, and the peon soldiers looked like they were taken out of power rangers... this movie was a long episode of power rangers...
