Why Ryan Reynolds' GREEN LANTERN Doesn't Work In THE MAN OF STEEL Universe

Ryan Reynolds' chin versus Henry Cavil's pecs.

2016 marks the release of a highly anticipated film. Batman vs Superman or whatever the hell it'll be called has got alot of people wondering about what other DC properties might end up along side Bat-Fleck. The most likely answer is The Justice League but, what characters will be in it and who will play them. Green lantern will no doubt be in the mix in some way hopefully. But it better not be Ryan Reynolds' chin below that green, glowing domino mask. Here's why:

In 2011's Green Lantern film (which is an issue in itself) has the ability to shoehorn it's way in the new DCU if it wasn't for one thing. In Man of Steel it's presumed that "Super Heroes"  are new to the world, starting with Superman. If that's the case then how would Green Lantern fit in? That film came out two years before MOS and no one mentions that giant green race car catching a falling helicopter or the giant yellow cloud that almost rained on that flying green man's parade. So how is it at all apart of the same world. Arguments could be made that the films' events don't take place on their release but then when do they take place?

All I want is for DC to have a coherent cinematic universe like Marvel (minus the Hulk/Ruffalo/Norton fiasco). Is that too much to ask? A better solution I feel for the lack of green in current DCU may already be happening. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been dropping hints via twitter that he will be playing a role in a DC movie. Many speculate that it's Lobo or Darkseid but those with some creativity say John Stewart, and no it's not the guy who hosts The Daily Show. This sound like a great plan because casting the Rock gives you a few oppurtunities. The first would be the least popular in my opinion, but that would be to keep the existing GL film cannon but have Reynolds hand over his secter of the galaxy to Johnson. The second which sounds much morre appealing is just straight up rebooting the character with Johnson as Stewart. Not bad but if DC wants to get real cray I offer a third suggestion.

Nathan Fillion isn't in a Marvel property yet so my advice for DC would be to scoop him up before his old buddy Whedon invites him to come play for his team. Imagine this,  Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. Hell, you don't even have to imagine it. Fillion has already voiced GL in a number of DC animated movies. He's a perfect fit. But don't stop there DC, What if after Nathan Fillion is a huge hit as GL and a sequel gets the green light? Dwayne Johnson as John Stewart alongside Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan in a Green Lantern styled buddy cop movie!!! The chemistry between those two would make Robert Downey Jr. shake in his iron, red boots. Not to mention it would be a nice comparision to the RDJ and Don Cheedle duet. Ahh I can see it now. BUt not really because by the time another Green Lantern movie comes out I'll be so old that I literally won't have any part of my sight left.

Fillion would make a pretty good GL, but he said in a recent interview (or heavily implied) that he’d be in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy post-credit scenes. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see

Nathan Fillion has said that he doesn't really want to be tied into another multi-film contract. He's comfortable with where he is now.

Honestly, I think everyone has this image of the actor from 9-12 years ago. He's packed on a few pounds. Nothing wrong with that, but he'd have to REALLY hit the gym to be anywhere near Ryan Reynolds' build.

I love the guy, but I'm not going to fancast him everywhere.

I just think his voice acting in those DC animated movies was so representative of the character. Every time I read GL I hear his voice, like how when reading Bats a lot of people hear Kevin Conroy. I really appreciate the feedback too.

"No doubt be in the mix some way hopefully"

It started confident and the confidence just drained.

I think they'll go with John Stewart, mainly to distance themselves from 2011's outing, but also to give it that much needed diversity that the marvel movies don't have. Like at all.

the answer to this question... the movie sucked.

There is one guy who perfectly embodies Hal Jordan, and that's Jensen Ackles.

The film did poorly but i would not mind if Green Lantern where attached to the DCCU.

Introduce GL in Justice League, then make a Green Lantern Corps movie with Hal, Stewart and maybe even Kyle Rayner. That's how WB/DC should solve the GL dilemma.

Yeah if Geoff Johns had more input it might have turned out maybe a little better storywise atleast

Moohika, I totally agree, who would you cast as Rayner? Just curious

"Fillion would make a pretty good GL, but he said in a recent interview (or heavily implied) that he’d be in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy post-credit scenes."

Actually, he simply said you have to watch the credits to know who he played, implying he's a voice or under heavy makeup.

Fillion is beyond Green Lantern shape at this point, but just in theory, the advantage that he has over Reynolds is that Fillion can shift from humor to convincing seriousness pretty seamlessly. He can do both separately, whereas Reynolds feels like a constant blend of the two.

You are probably right that that movie does not work, but it is sad because even if the movie is prehaps not the best, i do think the casting is next to perfect (with the only questionmark is Lively and Sarsgaard)

That's super tough given his background, my only thought is DJ Cotrona, but I don't know about his acting skills.

I don't recall, but did anyone mention gamma radiated monsters in Iron Man??
I really don't think so, yet The Incredible Hulk is canon with the MCU.

I say let Reynolds be Hal again, I don't mind.

Brad Pitt could play an aging Hal Jordan who passes the torch to John Stewart.

Reynolds is a very very talented and underrated actor.
I think he gets a lot of criticism for no reason.

"Fillion is such an annoying looking actor and IS annoying. I don't understand the love for him, what so ever."

PREACH!

Reynolds is criticized because he's [frick]ed in every single CBM he has ever been in and was wrong for Hal.

I think that Theo James would make an excellent Hal Jordan. I would also like to see Jesse Williams take on the role of John Stewart.

@MAK

But do you honestly think it's his fault? He's had a lot of crappy film roles but you can't tell me that it was Ryan's fault that the writing for Origins and GL was awful. I doubt even Leonardo DiCaprio or (inset great actor name here) could do those roles justice.

I really like Reynolds as Hal but if they do decide to recast here's my top 10 choices to replace him:

3.) Alex O'Loughlin
4.) Chris Pine
5.) Josh Duhamel
6.) Nathan Fillion
7.) Bradley Cooper
8.) Sam Worthington
9.) Jake Gyllenhaal
10.) Brain Austin Green

Its not like Fillion as GL hasn't been talked about on this site for years. Hell, before the first GL movie came out, everyone wanted Fillion to play Hal.

This is nothing new, and its kind of comical how you wrote this article like you just came up with this fantastic idea.

Here's the problem...there is no continuity because nothing was planned a head of time. Other than Nolan's Batman movies (of which only 1 was great and the 3rd one was pretty much iron Man 3) every DC movie for the last 20 years has been regrettable shit.
