BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Crosses $600M WW; ALIEN: COVENANT Opens To $42M

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continued its box office sweep this weekend, with no signs of slowing down. The James Gunn-directed film opened in its final market (Japan) this past Friday, leading to a weekend haul of $52.5 million (according to analysis from Deadline), with its total worldwide now gross sitting at $630 million. It seems pretty likely at this point that Vol. 2 willl surpass its predecessor's total intake of $773.3 million soon enough.

In other spacefaring news, Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant also began its international run ahead of its domestic release this Friday, taking in $42 million overseas, finishing as the No. 2 international film of the weekend. Back on Earth, Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword continued to struggle with a $29 million intake.

Alien: Covenant releases this Friday, May 19th

Guardians making bank. Good, good. Long live superhero movies.

14.7 opening weekend on a 175 million dollar budget? That's got to be historically bad. Maybe next make your King Arthur movie actually look like a King Arthur movie.

So looking forward to Alien: Covenant. Watching the old movies this week.

@TheUnworthyThor - Alien, Aliens and if I'm in the mood, Alien 3. I have to be in a rare mood for that one. Makes me sad that it was the end of ripley, newt and Hicks. On a side note, I dated Michael Biehn's niece in high school. Never met the guy but they had pictures of them together and all that. Kinda cool I guess.

@chewie - I've always said as a movie I really like Alien 3 but as a sequel to Alien and Aliens I despise it.

I loved King Arthur. I suggest everyone give it a chance despite what the critics say.

@WatchTower616 - Nah. I love Arthurian legend, and will watch any movie even moderately based on it...but I'd never pay for what the trailers showed. It just looks ridiculously stupid

@Pathogen - Couldn't have said it better myself.

Movie does not interest me at all. I'll stick to watching Excalibur this week instead.

@WatchTower616 - I'm glad you loved it, but I have to say that the marketing for it has not sold me at all. It looks like it doesn't know what it wants to be. And Guy Ritchie is just not very good. Maybe I'll watch it on Netflix. But I doubt it.

@WatchTower616 - Guy Ritchie movies always deserve a go in my book.

@WatchTower616 - I saw the movie and liked it. But Guy Ritchies directing style doesn't fit the fantasy world

@TheGoat - the early 80's one? I haven't seen that in years, might have a look online for it.

@leethario - Yes! Great version of the tale and very true to the legend. Also, amazing music!

@TheGoat - £4 on Amazon, worth a go just for young Patrick Stewart.

Saw king Arthur this past weekend, went in with low expectations and walked out with it being one of my favorite movies so far this year. Too bad we won't be getting any sequels.

Also, the ost is some of the best stuff in the past couple years
