Avengers: Infinity War may not mention Star-Lord's team in the title but the Guardians of the Galaxy will play a big role in the battle against Thanos. Seeing them assemble alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes promises to be extremely satisfying and we're now taking a look back at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a movie which firmly established this group's place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy introduced us to James Gunn's brilliant take on the group of A-Holes, the follow-up fleshed them out to an even greater extent and gave them new looks to boot.

Perhaps the biggest change, though, was Groot. He "died" in the previous movie and was reborn in a plant pot before growing some legs and being able to join the team on their adventures. The cute little character shifted a lot of toys but he was still a pivotal part of proceedings and Marvel's talented team of concept artists put a lot of work into creating his look which you can check out in the gallery below.

Designing Baby Groot

James Gunn has made it clear that Baby Groot is actually the original Groot's son as opposed to a reborn version of the hero. As a result, Marvel faced some big challenges coming up with his new look.

Guardians of the Galaxy established a rough idea of what Baby Groot might look like but the sequel needed to expand on that and this version looks a little more toddler-esque based on his face.

This Baby Groot is a little lankier and the roots growing around his face make it clear that he's still very much in the process of growing and that he's essentially getting bigger every day as a result.

Some Cute Accessories

Marvel had to establish Baby Groot's size as well and putting him with props like Star-Lord's cassette was a smart way to achieve that. Unfortunately, this version's face looks a little too old for his body!

Baby Groot having a little toy racoon is a cute touch but his feet look really weird as does the fact his body is made up of such large pieces of wood. However, that hairstyle really works for the little guy.

Some Early Sketches

These sketches come from a very early stage in the design process as Marvel's talented team of concept artists tried a variety of body sizes and facial expressions for the adorable sentient tree.

Final Concepts

In these designs (which were clearly created on a computer), Baby Groot is starting to take shape but the small changes being made - such as his eyes - show how much thought was put into that.

Baby Groot Gets A Costume

How cute is this? When you think about it, it wouldn't have made much sense for the Ravagers to have a uniform for Groot which actually fit, so here he's pictured wearing an oversized costume!

Baby Groot finally gets an outfit which is the right size but Marvel is clearly toying with the idea of going either with a jacket or trousers, both of which have their good and bad points overall.

Baby Groot's Facial Expressions

Aww, look at that cute little smile! Baby Groot goes through a range of emotions in the movie but seeing him happy is definitely a treat and that one tooth missing is definitely a nice little touch.

We first saw Baby Groot get angry when Drax lands on Star-Lord's cassette player and stops him from getting down to ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky," a perfect way to kick off James Gunn's awesome sequel.

This is just hard to look at. He's so cute and looks so damn sad! Vol. 2 had a lot of heart-wrenching moments but seeing him soaking wet in that little costume was enough to melt anyone's heart.

What did you think of Baby Groot's appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Are you excited to see him become a teenager? Let us know your thoughts on that in the comments section below.

I've liked the arc that Groot has been given in these films so far. It must be hard to write something for a character that can only say 3 words.

Really hope he makes it outta this film alive, or at least if he dies, I hope we get another Baby Groot in A4.

@L0RDbuckethead - not another baby groot. but one of the guardians should die in IW. it would really change the dynamic of gaurdians 3.

@mynameisn0body - My money is on Gamora (and maybe Nebula). I have heard multiple rumors of how Gamora dies in the film - everything from it being the same way Nebula dies in the comics to Thanos trapping her soul in the Soul Stone in order to activate it.

But all those could be bullshit, who knows? We'll find out in 17 days!

@Nebula - I agree, didn't really care for these versions. The CGI on him was really well-done in the film.

I'm in the middle of my MCU re-watch before Infinity War, and I'm continuously impressed every time Groot extends his branches out - it looks very convincing.

Also pardon the off-topicness but Arrow: Thea may be gone but Abercrombie will be back fully on S7.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but...

Getting real freaking fed up with both Anti-MCU and Anti-DCEU Twitter right now. Goddamn canerous fanatics giving themselves and others a bad name.

This is them right now... I wish I was joking.
