GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: VOL. 2 To Be First Movie Shot With New RED 8K Digital Camera

It seems Marvel Studios is continuing to keep up with the latest film technology as production on its “Phase Three” slate gets further underway. This summer’s Captain America: Civil War is the first movie to use the new digital IMAX camera for an action sequence while the Avengers: Infinity War two-part event will be the first movies shot entirely in the format. And now comes word that next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2. will be the first movie to use an even newer digital camera when director James Gunn and new cinematographer Henry Braham start shooting next month.

Today, RED Digital Cinema announced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first production shooting on WEAPON outfitted with the ground-breaking 8K RED DRAGON® sensor. Joining the WEAPON 6K, SCARLET-W 5K, and RED RAVEN™ 4.5K in RED’s latest generation DSMC2™ line of cameras, the WEAPON 8K once again pushes the envelope of modularity, image quality, and form factor. “I cannot even begin to express how proud I am that Marvel and everyone involved in the production has decided to be the first to shoot on our WEAPON 8K,” says Jarred Land, President of RED Digital Cinema. “Given the enormous success of the first movie, we know first-hand how critical their team was in selecting a camera for the second installment. We consider this a huge affirmation that RED’s investment in cutting edge technology continues to be justified.” “We are all hugely excited to be shooting the next Guardians of the Galaxy on the new WEAPON 8K. This is my third collaboration with RED, having previously shot with the RED EPIC® on Prometheus and the EPIC DRAGON on Tarzan,” says Nik Korda, Executive Producer. “The large sensor size and super high resolution offered by the new WEAPON 8K, combined with its lightweight and compact size open up a whole range of new creative possibilities.” WEAPON 8K captures 8K at 75 frames per second (fps), 6K at 100 fps, or 4K at 150 fps with REDCODE® RAW; and its wide dynamic range produces cinema-quality images rich with natural color. Additionally, WEAPON 8K features interchangeable lens mounts, an intelligent OLPF system, and in-camera 3D-LUT outputs. “RED’s 8K WEAPON is the little big camera. Perfectly counterintuitive. And perfect for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2,” says Henry Braham, BSC, Director of Photography.

Starring Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Karen Gillan (Nebula), with Bradley Cooper (Rocket), and Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.

This is shaping up to be MARVEL'S BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT PHASE! It shows by how they're just upping their game with everything: cinematography, casts, storylines and now f*cling camera technology.

Cool but at what theater am I supposed to watch this at? And didn't everyone bitch about high frame rates?

That dude who directed THE REVENANT must be kicking himself as he watches these comic book films in-crouch on the cinematic technology territory that he prides himself in being a part of.

So this will at least look great, this is the same camera company that handled Prometheus and for all its faults it's a gorgeous sci-fi movie.

I'm surprised Ben Davis won't be cinematographer for GotG2. I guess he'll still be busy with Doctor Strange & his schedule won't allow him to do both. He did great on GotG and AoU was a pretty noticeable improvement from Avengers.

The Alexa 65 is the camera used for Civil War and it was the one used for the Revnant. It seems that the Alexa is better visually, so I wonder why Marvel decided to use a seemingly inferior camera when a superior one is at their disposal.

I doubt it will look different than any other movie. I've seen all of these movies where the filmmaker says they used a particular type of camera that will change the experience but that never happens. It's all the same.

I remember it was so revolutionary that they were using the Red Epic cameras for TASM and that movie didn't look better either.

@IJLSA - The frame rates listed are just max capabilities. This will still likely be shot at a standard frame rate, avoiding that "live television" look.

@thedarkknight1939 - For the most part, that type of talk from directors and cinematographers is just promotion for the brand they are using. A lot of the time these "latest and greatest" cameras come out, and although they ARE occasionally revolutionary and game changing, that is usually coming from a production standpoint, not an audience standpoint. But there certainly are instances where some of these movies do "look better." But the general audience doesn't necessarily know what to look for in a better image.

@HornySpidey Sorry, I've had this posted and completed over 10 hours ago. It's just now going live because I set the wrong time before I went to work. And I just got off a couple hours ago. If you still have your link (or the article number), you'll see mine was posted before yours. Nothing personal.
