James Gunn Dishes On Star-Lord's Dad And THANOS' Role In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

Will the mad titan Thanos be the main baddie in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Is Peter Quill's father the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, like in the comics? Director James Gunn answers both after the jump

"There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us," says James Gunn of the question raised at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be answered in the 2017 sequel. "That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff." For those speculating on who Peter Quill's father might be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the director then confirmed to Empire that J'son, aka Jason of Spartax, who is Star-Lord's father in the comics, can be ruled out. "It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much," Gunn said.

Another character who is expected to appear, or rather return, in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is none other than Thanos, played by Josh Brolin. In fact, there is heavy speculation the mad titan will
be the main villain in the 2017 sequel, which would then set in motion his heavier presence in Marvel's Avengers 3. However, Gunn confirms that that will not exactly be the case. "He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not," he said."Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos." The director continued, "I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like..." Anyhow, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 releases July 28, 2017.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

I wonder who will be a the main or secondary threat in Guardians of the Galaxy. It could possibly be the Kree Empire since the peace treaty was meddled with and it resulted in the (possible) death of Ronan. Especially since the Kree Ambassador refused to condemn Ronan for his actions.

I'm glad that they are taking it slow with Thanos. I want him to be that baddest villain in movie history.

Think Quill's pops could be Eros (Starfox), brings the Eternals in to play and would make it very interesting having Pete's dad, a brother to Thanos...plus, he's a womanizer...

This really makes the theory that it's Adam Warlock seem more plausible.

What if Quill's dad will be the dead Kree from AoS? I haven't seen GotG yet (4 MORE DAY!), so I'm not sure if it makes sense...

One of the best things that came out of GotG...the same cinematographer is doing Avengers AoU! I thought the entire film was beautiful and had such a grand scale, can't wait to see that 'style' brought to AoU....
