James Gunn May Have Plans For Star-Lord And Co. Beyond GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

While at the Tokyo International Film Festival, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn discussed plans for the sequel (and beyond), whether he has time to film anything else between Guardian installments, and making movies the Marvel Studios way.

The Playlist caught up with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn at this year's Tokyo International Film Festival and asked a number of pertinent, Guardian questions. First among them, was what Gunn plans for the sequel.

"We open up on a “Mission: Impossible” scenario where all the characters die…No, to be honest, I had the basic story for number two while I was working on number one, and perhaps even beyond that. So it’s gonna answer a lot of questions that are proposed in the first one, and we’ll be able to get to know some of the characters we didn’t get to know in the first one a little bit more, and we might meet a few new characters too."

Sounds like Gunn may have a story in mind for a Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, not just the sequel. On balancing making movies the Marvel way and the James Gunn way, the director said there was a fine balance.

"I very much knew that there were certain things about ‘Guardians’ that needed to stay the Marvel way, but then figuring out a way around them to do my own thing was I think part of what made me have so much fun with the movie. So there’s always those things, whether they’re budgetary or otherwise. And even on ‘Guardians,’ there was a lot of budgetary constraints."

And while Gunn is busy toiling away on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, The Playlist asked whether attending the Tokyo International Film Festival has inspired Gunn to return to his indie, low-budget roots.

"I think if I were to do something in a lower budget, I’d probably do it in another medium. I would be more interested in doing something like that on television —something I haven’t done.....Definitely “True Detective” was a great example of one director, one story. It worked fantastically well. Well, I thought it worked fantastically well, I know a lot people didn’t. A lot of people didn’t like the last episode, I loved it. But I do have a lot of hardcore atheist friends who react badly whenever there’s even a hint of mysticism."

The Guardians of the Galaxy will return in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, out in US theaters on May 05, 2017.

James Gunn took a 180 mil budget and made what felt like a 300 mill film.

I sometimes feel as if budgetary constraints can help movies like GOTG in a roundabout way. When a director as ambitious and imaginative as Gunn is involved sometimes less is more.

Look at the early history of original Star Wars Trilogy compared to the later history of its prequels.

Can you imagine how terrible some of those earlier films would have been if Lucas had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted with the special effects? We may have seen many more stupid CGI created abominations like Jar Jar Binks in a New Hope. Empire Strikes Back could have been muddied by some really pointless special effects scenes the way Peter Jackson is ruining the Hobbit movies.

Also re: True Detective - it started off as a very promising existential horror/ crime drama and ended on a flat, cliched note. The skeptic becomes a believer after a near death experience. Yawn.

@RamonSuarez I couldn't agree more, especially with your comparison to the Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings has a realistic feel to it because CGI is only used when necessary. The look and even the PHYSICS of the Hobbit are so inconsistent and thats due to the oversaturation of CGI.

Yeah I know. In fact, it feeds into what I'm saying.

My point is that the fact that the original Star Wars had budget and technological limitations that forced Lucas to do more with less special effects. He had to write a tighter story more grounded in the humanity of the characters than in showing us elaborate set pieces, CGI robot armies, or how many times Yoda can whirl in the air like a Dervish.

I agree..... The budget directly influences the script... And a tighter budget sometimes means a tighter script

If money is not a problem and if he can find the right character that could fit his particular style, I say he should direct a Marvel one-shot (of course, if those ever return).

To me Peter Jackson, like George Lucas before him, is a director that is becoming more and more interested in making fantastic characters look real and forgetting about to make them feel real in the process.

Take Yoda for example in Lucas' case.

Even though Yoda was basically a glorified Muppet in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi the character never felt more real in all the Star Wars franchise than he did in those two movies because Lucas had to find ways of selling the character beyond his physical appearance. Lucas did that by making Yoda interact with Luke in a real and human way through deliberate dialogue, choreography, and camera work. Even though it wasn't perfect there was the illusion of a connection you could feel in the movie because so much effort was put into it.

By the time of Clone Wars saga, Yoda became another special effect digitally filled into an empty space that Lucas wanted to show off with.

And I think that a director like Gunn - who can be so off the wall hit or miss brilliant - has the potential of falling into that trap if he's given too much budget and technology to go crazy with his direction. He strikes me as the kind of guy who wants to always push the envelope and sometimes science fiction/space films like this are better when you hold back and realize that audiences connect with the familiar more than the uncanny.

I disagree. The acting in the original Star Wars trilogy was way better with Yoda than the prequels. Name me one memorable Yoda moment in the prequels that didn't involve a battle.

"I think restraints of any kind can be a good thing for a movie. If you don't have all the cash to just throw at something it can mean you have to rely on your creativity more and think of ways round certain problems."

Then I also disagree there too. Harrison Ford as Han Solo alone makes the cast in the original trilogy better than anything we saw in the prequels.

I would love for Gunn to mastermind the cosmic movies for Marvel... And can we get a brief intro to that Holy Church of Truth group floating out there in space causing trouble? That would be cool in a movie.
