Like the rest of us, James Gunn woke up to the news that a true legend had passed on. David Bowie died after an 18 month battle with cancer at the age of 69, and the director counted himself among his biggest fans.
Gunn posted a tribute to the man he called "an idol" to his Facebook page, and mentioned that he and Kevin Feige had discussed the possibility of Bowie making a cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They initially heard back that he probably wouldn't have been feeling up to it, but then afterwards that he was doing okay and there might be interest after all - making Gunn's Twitter discovery all the more shocking.
"Just a very short while ago Kevin Feige and I were talking about a cameo role in Guardians Vol. 2, and he brought up Bowie's name. I told him nothing in the world would make me happier, but I heard from common friends he wasn't doing well. We heard back that he was okay and it could potentially happen. Who knows what that was about? But, for whatever reason, it made my Twitter revelation more of a surprise."
Gunn used Bowie's song "Moonage Daydream" from arguably his most popular album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, for the first GOTG, and reveals that he might choose another for Vol. 2. Even though the director has "cut the scene it was used in from the script", he says he's going to try to figure something out.
