The Team Look A Lot More Like Their Comic Counterparts In This GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Concept Art

In this concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we look at alternate costume designs for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, and Rocket...who bears a striking resemblance to his comic book counterpart...

Avengers: Infinity War may not mention Star-Lord's team in the title but the Guardians of the Galaxy will play a big role in the battle against Thanos. Seeing them assemble alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes promises to be extremely satisfying and we're now taking a look back at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a movie which firmly established this group's place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy introduced us to James Gunn's brilliant take on the group of A-Holes, the follow-up fleshed them out to an even greater extent and gave them new looks to boot.

However, Marvel Studios clearly put a lot of thought into the team's appearance based on these amazing alternate designs which both pay homage to the comic books and also tease vastly different looks for characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, and Rocket (don't worry, we'll get to Groot soon). So, to check out the full list of artwork, all you have to do it click on either one of the buttons below.

Star-Lord

This very cool piece sets the mood for Star-Lord's arc in the sequel and based on how tattered his jacket looks, it's clear this was conceived with the idea that he's been at this for a few years now.

Marvel is known for changing up the looks of its heroes from movie to movie so how cool would it have been to see Peter Quill ditch his now trademark red jacket for this snazzy new blue number?

There are only some small differences to what ended up on screen here and it's hard to figure out why some of these alterations didn't make the cut as they give Star-Lord a fresher appearance.

Ah, now this is a little more familiar! The concept art shown here clearly inspired Star-Lord's final appearance in the movie and it works for the character, hence why it'll be used in Infinity War

Gamora

This awesome shot of Gamora and Star-Lord together (on what we can only assume is Ego's surface) is wallpaper worthy and nicely establishes how great these two look side by side on screen

Not a huge amount of time passed between Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel but here we see that Marvel explored quite a few different options for how Gamora's appearance could have evolved.

This stunning portrait of Zoe Saldana's Gamora gives us a better look at some of the enhancements Thanos gave her...here's hoping we learn more about their past in Avengers: Infinity War, eh?

Marvel and James Gunn clearly toyed with the idea of putting the team in blue in the sequel as Gamora is rocking a very different sort of costume here and it works surprisingly well on the hero.

Another couple of alternate designs for Gamora here, they don't make a massive difference but I'm definitely digging the biker jacket she's wearing in the second image...it really suits the Guardian!

Drax

Off all the Guardians, there wasn't really much Marvel could do with Drax in the sequel but his slightly upgraded look (which makes him blend in with the team a little more effectively) works really well.

No, Marvel wasn't considering a drastically different look for Drax in the movie! These are actually designs for that spacesuit he wears...you know, the one that irritates his poor, sensitive nipples.

Rocket Raccoon

Once again, the colour blue pops up here and I'm now convinced that Marvel was considering giving the entire team a makeover for this sequel. Personally, I think it works well on all of these characters.

Ok, is it me or does Rocket look a little like The Winter Soldier here? Between the dark blue suit and the flash of red on his arm, I can't actually help but be reminded of Bucky at first glance.

This comic accurate take on Rocket works really well and I like the small touches such as the teeth hanging around his neck. Are they a trophy from a hard fought battle between the two movies?

This is an effective enough look for Rocket and builds on what's come before as well as paying homage to the source material with the orange. Here's hoping it evolves even more in Vol. 3, though.

Every one of these is amazing. I'd have been happy with any of these.

Always...ALWAYS LOVED that very first Concept Art of Star Lord with the cape and in blue/grey.

Maybe when it’s rebooted.

"Off all the Guardians, there wasn't really much Marvel could do with Drax..."

Always dependable, Wilding. Every single time.

I like the blue suit on Starlord more. Still not entirely enthused about these characters moving forward - maybe with the exception of Gamora and Nebula and their respective roles in Infinity War.

Also, it wasn't the spacesuit that irritated Drax's nipples, it was the jetpack.

Would love to see something close to this.

@aflynn - Agreed that this was the best look, but really, Gamora remains one of Marvel's rare misfires, at least to me. I don't mind Zoe Saldana in the MCU, but nothing about her or the character design have been exceptional. Even her onscreen chemistry with Chris Pratt is perfunctory at best. They could insert any random green skinned female and have the same results.

@ImperiousRex - She should be more vicious and intimidating. In Gotg 2 she was very girl next door. I also would love to see more green skin like more what she used to wear in the comics.

I'm digging the blue suits more than the red

@MNLawyer - I want the full movie without cgi characters, just them pretending to be a raccoon and a tree with those suits.

The Guardians movies have some of the most boring costume designs.

It's not this space suit that irritates Drax' nipples, it's the jetpack that Rocket and Peter use.

I hate that they keep giving star Lord that ugly trench coat. But I'm digging the blue and red color scheme from the comics

Love Park's work but it's always funny when you see the design that's clearly 'Marvelized' versions of every costume

Hope we see the blue suits in Volume 3. It’d be a nice change to finally unify their costumes and nod to their comic look

@Ha1frican - they should indeed have more team suits (with that goodlooking blue). Only other outfits they wore were either their own suits from before teaming up or regular ravagers costumes

I love the look of Star Lord with a scarf, and I'd love it if next time we see him (post-IW) they can incorporate some blue into his jacket as an homage to his most well known look in the comics, even if they do keep it predominantly red as that's how he's most recognized since his film debut.

The concepts for Gamora look great too - the cut off biker jacket and the longer coat both work really well for her. And I'd love to see Rocket in some kind of combination of concepts 2 and 3 at some point, with the orange colour scheme and random tooth necklace from 3 but the more militarised, almost gladiatorial outfit design from 2.

And as for Drax... yeah, that looks like Drax! Not much they can do besides give him different coloured pants.
