Ghostface Will Be Re-Invented In The SCREAM TV Series

A couple of weeks ago, we got confirmation that MTV had picked up the SCREAM TV series for a 10-episode season. Now, it seems that the killer in the show will be a bit different from his movie incarnation

At the end of last month, MTV picked up the television reboot of the popular horror franchise, Scream, for a 10-episode season. The show will feature a completely new cast of characters and apparently a new Ghostface...

Since the show has been in development, rumours have been claiming that MTV doesn't own the rights to Ghostface and that the killer wouldn't appear in the show at all. Thankfully there is no validity to those rumours whatsoever but that doesn't mean the killer will be the same.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, MTV's senior vice president Mina Lefevre stated, "Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer. We’re tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.”

Lefevre gave a little more details as to what we can expect from the new costume, the mask in particular: "It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask. It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.”

Strangely enough, Lefevre doesn't debunk the possibility of the original Ghostface costume making an appearance in the show despite the reboot. "It’s a little preliminary, obviously because we haven’t even started our writers room, to say that we will never see that other mask or not."

So what do you horror fans on this site think of this news? Are excited to see a newer, darker version of Ghostface or should MTV stick with the original material? As always, leave your thoughts below.

I though this was obvious but, to avoid possible confusion, the second image isn't what the new Ghostface looks like in the show. I included it there to show the new one will be different. There is no photo yet.

I'm all for this show, but they are putting way too much thought into the mask.

Just keep the iconic look.

If this is even done by someone in a fraction of what Bryan Fuller has done with NBC's Hannibal then I'll watch it for sure.

Even horror is getting darker and more grounded. Wow.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)- Sucked

Halloween (2007)- Horrendous

Friday the 13th (2009)- Sucked

Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)- Sucked

Evil Dead (2013)- Decent

Except for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I thought all those reboots were better than the original

The 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre was actually really good IMO. The rest sucked, though.

Well, it wasn't terrible, but I wasn't a huge fan. It had it's moments.

Really this is happening and MTV is doing it.

Seems like a disaster from the get go.

I think Scream is fantastic. Like... completely fantastic. I think 3 is pretty much garbage, and even though 4 is better than I thought it would be, I think a series is actually a better format for delivering what made the first two movies so good.

That said, this is pretty much the worst news. If anything, this is precisely the right time to find that sense of humour and heart to go with the simple fright of someone trying to kill you that the movies had - not to cater to the inane, gritty, joyless paste that generic horror movies have become.

Then again, I say that as a 30 year old. If they're gunning for 15 year olds with this, it absolutely has to be gritty and joyless. Heck, even 15 year olds during the 90s wanted gritty and joyless.

The trilogy was good, but they [frick]ed up the fourth one. They broke the ultimate rule of a remake- Don't [frick] with the original.

"almost more grounded"

Ugh. Anyone else getting beyond sick of Hollywood and studios in general tossing around that term like it still meant something?

Grounded. Gritty. Realism. Darker.

Studios can go munch on my left nut...I'm sick of hearing those now overused buzzwords.

Eh.. How did that mask become that mask? It was designed by some person, made in a factory and some psykos bought a few? It is still a mask, even in the films, or did I miss something? Even if the 1st kille made it by himselfe, it is still just a damn plastic/rubber mask. And how do you make it more realistic and grounded when there was absoloutly no supernatural or fantasy what so ever in the movies?! Do they just toss those words around and hope it sticks? The movies are about psycotic teens slashibg people while wearing a mask. How much more grounded can you get??

Yeah... I'm not sure about this. Dark and grounded, huh? But I kind of want to watch the movies again now, those were fun.

And I have to admit that I quite enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot. You know, "for what it was". Now the PREQUEL to the reboot was shit. As well as whatever that movie with Alexandra Daddario was. ^^ Still haven't watched the Evil Dead remake.

they're forgetting about the meta-horror. imo that's what made scream so great
