Ironman 3 review

Warning: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Last night was the premier of Ironman 3, directed by Shane Black. Known for the films "Kiss Kiss bang bang", & "Lethal Weapon". Now he's turned his focus on Marvels most intriguing and eccentric hero, "Iron Man".

Being an admitted comic geek. It's generally hard for me, to look at a comic book film for what it is. While keeping my inner fan boy in check. With that said, my friend Neal suggest I write this review in 2 parts. One as a critic of film, and the other as a fan of the source material.

FILM CRITIQUE:

“It’s not a serious movie, but we seriously dig into exploring more of Tony. -SHANE BLACK
(Source: Firstshowing.net)

Shane wasn't kidding! this movie explored more of Tony Stark playboy persona. While leaving the hero to take the back seat. Which addresses the question, does the suit make the man? or does the man make the suit? Does Tony Stark need the suit to be the hero he's grown to be?

Director Shane Black answers that question. Left to his own devices, Tony must survive the challenges ahead of him. Both physically and mentally. The movie starts off New years 1999, almost 10 years before the infamous piece of shrapnel enters his heart. We meet a younger, more eccentric (like that's possible) Tony Stark.

Fast Forward several years, and now we see a very changed post Avengers Tony who is going through post traumatic-- No, let's call it for what it is. Tony is Shell shocked. Through out the film you see him slowly unraveling.

Aside from the quirky comedy, and awkward one liners. This film is pretty solid for what it is, as always Robert Downey Jr. delivers as Tony Stark. Don Cheadle comfortably reprises his role as Col. Rhodes. Ben Kingsley gave a great performance as The Mandarin. Lastly, Guy Pearce played his role well as Aldrich Killian. Over all this was a solid film, especially for people that's not versed in the Ironman lore. Is it the best out of the three? I'm sorry but it looks like the first Ironman film prevailed again. But it's surely an improvement from part 2.

Rating: 3.5/

As a fan of the comics:

Honestly my only issue is how The Mandarin was handled. Not going to spoil anything. But, it sucked.

Rating 2.5/5

To all the haters on this site. This is what I have to say about iron man 3. First off iron man 3 was the first movie released by marvel after the avengers. So lets face it all in all there was no where to go but down from there. All of you who held it to the avengers standard were probably highly disappointed . But avengers was something special and we probably won't get anything like that again till avengers 2. As a stand alone movie iron man 3 was incredible it had a good mix of action comedy and drama and allowed us to a see a vulnerable side of stark, yeah Ben Kingsley ended up not being the real mandarin but mandarin was on the movie! Killian clearly said I AM THE MANDARIN. Yeah he ended up being a blonde white guy but the blonde white put on a incredible performance so I'm ok with that. He had a really nice set of powers thanks to extremis and tony didn't end up fighting some armored guy at the end. If you take it for what it is you'll see that iron man 3 is a really good stand alone film and I'm my opinion a great way to kick off phase 2

@Thor86
It's not about ppl comparing IM3 to Avengers. It's about going in with some expectations, and those expectations not getting fulfilled.

1. People Expected a Darker Tone, they didn't get it.

2. They expected a tighter Plot, they didn't get it.

3. And ppl expected something more than just I AM THE MANDARIN. They didn't get it..
I was expecting them to take Mandarin to a higher level when I saw those broadcasts by Mandarin. What I got was a I-am-the-mandarin-and-he's-not by Pearce.

Overall the movie was good. Loved the Vulnerable side of Stark, Kingsley's acting and especially Tony remote controlling the suit.
