What 'Iron Man 3' Means To Me

'Iron Man 3' is a film that means a lot to me as both a fan and a person. It did something no other film has done before. Here I explain exactly what that was.

First, a tiny bit of background on me-because this is my first article in a loooooong while-so you have some context. I am 18 and from Western Australia, and I currently attend university studying Physics. The 'nerdy' culture is something I've grown up with my entire life -'Star Wars', 'Dragonball Z', 'Transformers' and 'Spider-Man' were my childhood-but something I have only really come to understand in the last five years. My knowledge about characters and stories and lore has grown exponentially-it was in 2010 that I actually started reading the comics, and now I make weekly trips to multiple stores to get my fix. I like both Marvel and DC a lot and watch all the films coming from either company (besides 'Jonah Hex' obviously).

So moving on now. 'Iron Man 3' has proven to be a very controversial film among the fans. Some seemingly love to trash it and call it 'the worst MCU film so far', while others (quite surprisingly including most critics) are very positive about the film. I most definitely fall into the latter category. I truly love the film-I believe it to not only be a fitting resolution to the story of Tony Stark (well...I suppose not really a 'resolution'...) but also a great all-round film altogether, with excellent effects, great humour and a very personal storyline. I can positively give the film an 8.5/10 and say it is the best film of the MCU so far...for ME-just making this clear, film (like many other aspects of life) is a subjective experience in terms of whether we like it or not, because every person is different and brings different contexts to their viewing of the film.

But see before actually going to see the movie (on opening day mind you) I would be very surprised to learn that those above words would be my reaction.  You see I (in the extreme, controversial minority here, but I don't care) did not like 'The Avengers'. Really. I won't get into my reasonings here (okay, I'll give you one of them, and his name is RUFFALO), but I just find the film very overhyped and don't just blindly love the film because of the 'all your favourite superheroes in one movie!' aspect, which for Marvel Studios would be a clear attractive factor. I wanted a film that had heart, reason and STORY, not just a billion-dollar free-for-all. Anyway. The film left a sour taste in my mouth and lead me to question what would be coming in future films-namely the first film of Phase 2, 'Iron Man 3'.

Now I am one of these guys that loves spoilers. I scour the internet for them. I can't help it. I LOVE to know information, and having become so entrenched into this 'comic book culture' I simply want to know, well, what is going to happen. The internet makes things so easy...anyway. Basically, a week or two before 'Iron Man 3' came out in theatres I came across an article on WhatCulture.com-I cannot recall the name right now, but it was a '10 Things...' or '10 Reasons...' article that essentially spoiled some big points of 'Iron Man 3'. I remember getting to the last page of the countdown...and then there it was. The BIG spoiler. What has now become known as 'the Mandarin twist'.

The writer explained the fact that who we thought was the Mandarin was actually an actor called Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) and Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian was the real villain of the film, the 'real' Mandarin. They even had a Photoshop picture (which I cannot currently find) of Guy Pearce's head on Kingsley's Mandarin body, if only for emphasis. And so after reading this...I was horrified. I hated it. I hated what they had done to this character. I even think I despised it. I felt like...Marvel had taken TWO characters from the comic books and completely butchered them for the sake of their story. I felt like Killian would merely be a copy of what we had seen in the first two films-just another 'businessman antagonist' like Obadiah Stane and Justin Hammer.

On the whole, I was pissed off. I felt like 'The Avengers' was merely the starting point for the MCU to go off course and crash, and 'Iron Man 3' would continue the trend for me. It pretty much killed all excitement for the film. I was now going to see the film out of obligation, because it was a comic book movie and it would be 'weird' if I didn't see it.

Then opening day came. 15 minutes or so of pre-movie ads, and then we were into the movie. Two and a bit hours later hours later, and it was finished. I walked out loving it. I absolutely loved the film. The scene in which the twist was revealed was played completely for laughs-the film's humour which occurred throughout was a very positive attribute for me, and I enjoyed it. The effects were excellent, and I actually found myself really liking Pearce's portrayal of Killian-he wasn't just another 'guy in a suit', but a threatening adversary with a personal emnity against both Stark and Pepper that extended back years, AND they gave him powers. The final battle raised the stakes with the President himself being on the line (I don't usually like it when films do this but in this case it made sense).

I enjoyed the film's certain similarities to 'The Dark Knight Rises' from the previous year, in terms of deconstructing the hero mentally, emotionally and physically to his bare bones, stripping him of all (well...most) allies and resources and forcing him to gruellingly fight his way back to the top. The film reached a slightly darker tone than the others before it and made this confident, brilliant individual who we hadn't really seen in a vulnerable position before fragile for the first time, as a result of his panic attacks (props to Marvel for not willing to 'go there'-i.e. 'Demon in a Bottle'-for 'Iron Man 2') . Sure, I had a few issues ("S.H.I.E.L.D. where you at son? The goddamn President's in danger!") but no film is perfect. By the end I didn't even mind Ruffalo's post-credits scene cameo.

So at the end of the day, why is 'Iron Man 3' so special to me? What does all of this mean? The film was singlehandedly able to change my view on something-I went in believing I was going to hate the film and came out loving it, and that had never happened to me before. Has that happened to any of you before? Have you had an experience like that? I'm sure to some of you this is fairly irrelevant and unimportant, but to ME the uniqueness of this event really means something to me. One film was able to completely change my attitude and revive a hope for this film universe that had been lessened by my experience with 'The Avengers'. And that deserves a bloody lot of praise and a special area in my heart in my opinion.

Thanks for reading guys, have a good one.

Good shit man! I personally like Iron Man 3 more than Iron Man, and is up there behind Winter Soldier and Avengers.

inb4 the hate comes in

I used to like it. But it's gotten kinda stale on me. Sure it isn't as bad as it's predecessor, but the only memorable things about it are Ben Kingsley's short lived reign as the terrifying Mandarin. As well as a few good (not great) action pieces. Everything else was forgettable and kinda sucked.

I really enjoyed Iron Man 3 and Ben Kingsley was perfect in the dual natured role of the movie's Mandarin character.

Yes. I went into Thor expecting a shit film and loved it. I went onto Thor 2 and got the worst of the MCU. IM3 is actually solid. Not my favorite. But it's entertaining. I don't like Harley. I really don't think the kid did anything. I wish it was just him and war machine. If he got stuck in Tennessee but left a message for Rhodey to come find him and help him out. It would have been really fun. Regardless. It was a fun solid film.

I think the Avengers is a pretty awful film but a really good superhero film. The action and dynamics are awesome but the story and plot and some dialogue was pretty snotty. I hope ultron is better.

IM 3 is better than the whiny fanboys think, but it's not nearly as good as you think it is. Of course, you evidently didn't like Avengers, so quite frankly your taste is suspect anyway.
DatNerdyKid
DatNerdyKid - 4/6/2014, 2:36 AM
@Lhornbk ah...okay...thanks...all opinions welcome I guess. But remember what I said about this being SUBJECTIVE-everyone has differing opinions about things, and just because I don't happen to like something doesn't mean I'm 'wrong' or my 'taste is suspect'. It just means there's something about it I didn't like. Everyone is entitled to their own likes and dislikes and I shouldn't be judged based on the latter.

Iron Man 3 is the worst MCU movie yet. It makes me vomit in my mouth a little bit, then spit it out, only to turn into full-out vomit.

@Pasto and @TheAbaryMan369 keep in mind this wasn't SUPPOSED (though I think it kinda did in the end) to be a review of the film, but a piece about what the film did for me. So maybe try and keep unconstructive comments to a minimum? Thanks

Iron Man 3 was definitely not one for the fanboys, but mainstream audiences really enjoyed it. I liked it too, I thought the twist was bold as hell and I really liked what Shane Black brought to the movie. The fan in me will always be a little disappointed about not seeing Kingsley's Mandarin, and I agree there were plot holes too but overall it was a fun summer flick. Good write-up bud!

DatNerdyKid - 4/6/2014, 5:33 AM
Thanks Minty, love the Joker pic. Yes it was a very bold decision to go for that twist-what many either don't, or REFUSE to realise is that there had to have been a real reason for Shane Black to have gone with it. 'All Hail the King' was not an attempt to grovel to the fanboys but merely a further revelation of that grand plan.

@MrSotoMan to quote Sheldon Cooper, "That's YOUR opinion..."
DatNerdyKid
DatNerdyKid - 4/6/2014, 7:24 AM
@MrSotoMan Then explain the fact that there are a wide variety of opinions of the movie and these are pretty much split between positive and negative?
DatNerdyKid
DatNerdyKid - 4/6/2014, 7:48 AM
First of all what is WRONG with that being Harley's purpose? It lightened up a darker period in Tony's life and also it was an intriguing situation due to the fact it was one we had never seen him IN before.
I never said Mandarin is a 'cinematic achievement', nor do/did I think that I think it was CLEVER most definitely but nowhere near that magnitude. I never really believed Killian was the 'real' Mandarin for a second and 'All Hail the King' proved that. But even if they hadn't done that short my opinion of the movie would not change one bit.
And to set the record straight, I follow my own code. I don't mind being controversial. I don't mind being the only person that supports or the only person that hates a certain film or concept. I make up my own mind, as I did with 'Iron Man 3'. And I believe that neither of us are right or wrong about the film, our OPINIONS are merely what we take from it-and everyone is entitled to their opinion, so long as they don't tread on others and question their mental health (not you, just making an example) or say they lack 'credibility' because they think a certain way.

DatNerdyKid - 4/6/2014, 8:07 AM
What exactly do you mean by me 'jumping' though? I didn't change my opinion to blindly follow a herd, but because the film as a whole proved to be superior despite context-less aspects of it (i.e. the twist) aggravating me when I read about them. And look what's so wrong with him having creative control? Sure he may have one hell of an ego, sure inviting those 20 kids over may be a publicity stunt, but let's face it-he's a charismatic individual who's 'been there and done that' and was really the one to get this universe rolling. He deserves nice things.

Bizarro mirror world...Warner Bros.? Not even gonna ask about what appears to be DC hate.
But let me be perfectly honest here. If FOX or Sony had Iron Man, and made the EXACT same film with the EXACT same cast etc., the only thing that would have changed would probably be how much I disliked the idea of the twist when reading the spoilers-while I don't hate Fox or Sony as much as many appear to them being behind the film probably would've made me a bit more pissed off about the twist. But if it was the exact same film I would have loved it the same coming out. But I'm not everybody. Shame.

If FOX decides to make a really really good movie for once (though 'X-Men: First Class' and 'The Wolverine' were definitely step-ups) it would be even more miraculous. I would probably love the film even more because it was such a unique thing for Fox to make something exceptional.
Just because something is graced by the Marvel Studios logo doesn't mean I think it's pure gold. I don't like 'The Avengers' at all, as previously stated. I really really like 'The Amazing Spider-Man'. As just mentioned I really enjoy the last two films Fox put out. Studio doesn't matter to me, but the films they put out does.

Also completely off topic, but how does one embolden their comments or insert pictures/gifs? I haven't quite cracked that yet :P

But, to be clear, I don't care which studio makes it as long as the film's great. That's what will make me happy as a fan and a moviegoer.

Iron Man 3 didn't affect me one way or another. Except the VERY beginning, where "Blue" is playing - it played up the nostalgia factor for a moment, which made me appreciate Yinsen's brief cameo.

I thought it was super generic, I thought Killian's plot was kind of boring, even if it was intended to be. I thought the armors COULD have been cool if they hadn't appeared all at once - that just made you care less about most of em. I thought Rhodey might have had potential if he wasn't shoe-horned into the story.

There were some good highlights though. The North Carolina shoot-out fight with Brandt was good, because the actress was genuinely creepy. The Air Force One kidnapping/rescue was real good. Pepper had some good one-liners. I thought Trevor was hilarious.

Everything was just over-shadowed by the humor, to the point where everyone is trying to keep up, and trying too hard.

It was entertaining, but that's all.

Nice review DatNerd @

Gotta say i disliked IM 3 a lot first showing, still bought the blu-ray tho and liked it a lot better, normally I love Marvel Studio movies straight away, they did butt [frick] Mandarin a bit, I liked him in it before he turned into a joke, hoping Marvel will change that in future movies.

End of the day, IM 3 may be weak but is better than most Marvel Fox movies that have came out so far, just my opinion.

Just for the record I don't hate Fox, X-men and X2 were great for their day and I liked Daredevil Directors Cut and The Wolverine a lot as in not perfect or awesome but very good.

Loved the write up man. IM3 is the best of the trilogy for me. Incredible plot and storyline, great action, and the best executed twist since Usual Suspects.
