First off let's start with the timeline of the rumoured movie release dates that will be released in future years with solo movies before a Justice League team up movie.

Batman Begins - June 2005
The Dark Knight - July 2008
Green Lantern - June 2011
Batman 3 - July 2012
The Man of Steel - December 2012
The Flash - June 2013
Wonder Woman - August 2013
Aquaman - March 2014
Justice League - July 2014

(Where Green Lantern 2 fits into this remains to be seen. Sequels are 2-3 years away so that puts it in 2013/2014 more likely 2013 as they would want to focus on the JL movie. WB could push The Flash for May 2013 which would pit it against Iron Man 3 and fit Green Lantern into June/July with Wonder Woman August/September)

Now let's get down to business. "Batman Begins" is being referred to as "Action Comics #1" on the DC Entertainment thinking room table. "The Dark Knight" is "Action Comics #2" and "Green Lantern" will be "Action Comics #3".

Therefore there must be some sort of reference towards Batman or Gotham City within the Green Lantern movie just to let fans know that the movies are in safe hands. In the FIRST DRAFT of the Green Lantern script, Gotham City is mentioned as a place Green Lantern is seen saving people during a news montage. Will this still be in the movie? Time will tell.

"Batman 3" is "Action Comics 4#" and all fans know that Chris Nolan doesn't want to include himself into the DC Movie Universe club JUST yet. Therefore "Batman 3" will be a stand alone film linked exclusively to the first two. BUT, could some of WB's hierarchy persuade the Nolan brothers and Goyer to include a Superman reference? Especially since it will be released five month later? It would be every fan's dream.

"The Man of Steel" is the reboot produced by Christopher Nolan. He is going to be busy during the next two years and it will be "Action Comics 5#." To find out whether TMOS will include references to Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, or Bruce Wayne will probably depend on who the director will be and if he is willing to open his movie to include them. Nolan is pretty certain that TMOS will be separate in its "OWN" universe like the Batman films.

Here is my theory: Christopher Nolan is a massive Superman fan secretly and devotedly admires the "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II" films. Could he be waiting to take the reigns of "The Man of Steel 2 and 3" to complete another DC trilogy? I believe so, which is why somebody like Jonathan Nolan or a pencil pusher could be in the director's chair for TMOS until Nolan has finished with Batman.

"The Flash" will be "Action Comics 6#" and is moving quickly, recently. This is the most likely to include references to other superheroes given that the Green Lantern writing team is penning the script. It is more likely to be in Green Lantern as the two are more closely linked in the comics.

"Wonder Woman" and "Aquaman" are "Action Comics 7#" and "8#" respectively and are still in early development. They are at least three years away which is plenty of time to get them ready. By the time they come out, there will already be cross overs in the DC universe, and will more than likely be heavily linked to other heroe--if not cameos in these movies.

What do you think of the DC Cross Over business? Have your say below! :D

That sounds like a reasonable timeline. DC and Warner Bros. would be foolish to not want all of their main titles to be interconnected, seeing as how Marvel is having pretty good success so far. A few fans have wondered who would be the 'first' superhero in the DC movie universe, Superman or Batman (Superman being the first in the comics). They should keep it simple and have Batman be the first known costumed vigilante, never really seen, but tons of urban stories and still wanted by the police. Superman could be the first 'super' hero to go public and act fully out in the open without a mask. That way they could both be firsts. Really looking forward to what's going to come out in the next couple of years.:) Great time to be a comic movie fan.

@dave - That's cool. Still like to see Superman being the first, but I'll take what I can get. Green Lantern has always been one of my fav's as well. I just can't wait to finally see these super teams (Avengers and Justice League) on the big screen in their own films. Man, just to see Flash and Superman running beside each other at some point... can't wait!!

Dear Dave,

Nice article. Well written.

However, I feel it's wishful thinking, so long as Nolan is in charge of Batman. Nolan and his crowd (Jonah, Goyer etc.) are currently on a high. They live in the "gritty, realistic" world...a world where any hint of fantasy is frowned upon.

Can they bring themselves to accept the innocence and joy of a comic book world? I dont think so.

So, just leave Nolan's Batman and Superman out of your innocent DC Universe.

But yes, there is hope. The Green Lantern. The GL movie has the potential to do for DC what Iron Man did for Marvel. Beyond the world of the heavy hitters - Spiderman, Fantastic Four - it established a paradigm - that of a Marvel world of innocent fun, where a eccentric billionaire genius can co-exist with an other worldly God, and a microwave warmed Super soldier from a byegone era.

Leave Nolan's gritty realistic visions out of your thought process, think Green Lantern in isolation - and voila...!! There you have it in all it's glory - A Green Lantern who is friends with a Flash, a Wonder Woman from Venus, an Aquaman who can stay beneath water...fun. Innocent, pure fun. Fun unlimited.

What else does a Comic Book fan want ?

I have the impression that you don't know what you're talking about and that all of this is stuff your hoping. They don't even have a release date for the Flash yet much less Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or a JL movie. Personally if they do a JL movie I would like a Martian Manhunter to be in it then have a MM origin movie after it like how they did that with wolverine. I don't really care about a Aquaman movie but I'll probably see it when it comes out.

If Nolan decides not to be a prick and allow Batman to join up with the other heroes this is very likely.

So the assumption is that Bale will do it as long as Nolan is interested? I think that's a stretch. Bale did mention revisiting the character in ten years or so. Obviously, that leads to "Dark Knight Returns."
Your theory is reasonable, but you need to sew it together better. And does DC really want to "ape" Marvel? Don't forget about all the Superman ownership rights issues. They may not get TMOS made in time. That will negate using him in other films, too.
Nice effort, but there's just too many giant if's.

Great article! I agree with everything!
@Anil/Dave-Matt Bomer isn't intimidating enough to be Batman. Jeffery Donovan or Jon Hamm should play Batman IF Bale doesn't play him.

I'm just worried about Superman...you can't make a JLA film without a Superman, he's the FACE of the League...he's practically their spokesperson...he represents them to the public eye. If The Man Of Steel will be Superman's FINAL film...then if they do make a JLA film, there won't be a Superman in it. I'm saying TMOS may be Superman's final film because of the rights issues going on with the damn Siegel family.

After thinking about it,besides being a little short for the role,Matt Bomer would be be great as Batman! I still prefer Donovan or Hamm though.

Bale's Batman just had an over done voice. Easily overlooked since the rest was epic.

Wait...Dave Nichols you're saying that the actual ownership of Superman will revert back to the siegel family if TMOS isn't released before 2013??? I hope you're right, because the tentative release date is set for December of 2012. ^_^
