JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Zack Snyder Says He's "Pretty Excited" About James Gunn's DCU Plans

Justice League director Zack Snyder has briefly commented on DC Studios and James Gunn's DCU plans, admitting he's excited about the reboot but also intrigued to see where it takes Superman. Check it out!

Zack Snyder launched the DC Extended Universe in 2013 with Man of Steel. No one knew the plan was to build a shared world at the time, of course, and it wasn't until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came around that we got an idea of what the filmmaker had planned.

The slate Warner Bros. announced never really materialised and the Justice League saga surely isn't one we need to recap!

Snyder did get to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut in 2021, though it's since become clear that his association with the DC brand has ended. The DCEU ended with Orm eating a cockroach in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's post-credits scene, and it's now down to James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios to reboot the DCU.

Talking to CBR about the release of Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, Snyder offered some brief comments on those DCU plans.

"You know, I'm a pretty open book," he said. "I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I'm down. I'm in. Let's see what happens. I'm pretty excited[...] I mean, we're going to get Superman pretty soon, so we'll see what that's like."

Talking last November, Snyder shared his take on why his vision for the DCEU clashed with what Warner Bros. wanted from the brand.

"I never looked at it as the job, 'Oh, I’m the architect of DC. I need to create entertainment for DC that sells toys and that is for the masses and fun for everyone.' I didn’t care [about that]," he admitted. "I liked Batman, I liked Superman, I wanted to make something cool. You picked the wrong guy if you wanted a product."

DC Studios has made its intention to move on from the DCEU clear, recasting Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and essentially scrapping anything that Gunn didn't previously have his hands on (explaining why, so far, only actors from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are returning).

For what it's worth, Gunn has shared his support for Snyder's post-DCEU career saying earlier this year, "He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He's a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world building he's doing now."

Many fans remain optimistic that Snyder could be asked back to finish his Justice League trilogy, perhaps as an animated movie or comic book. We're not banking on it, but stranger things have happened...

See? Snyder's not so bad. He took the higher road and I believe he truly meant it.

Zack is like that psycho X that refuses to let go. Live your life and be happy. It didn't work out.

@NakedAvenger - to be fair

He keeps being asked about it , especially in interviews so he has to respond which was the case here.

@NakedAvenger - you do realize he gets asked these questions right? Also it may have not “worked out” in terms of reception on BvS (MoS and ZSJL were received alright) but MoS and BvS both made good money.

MoS: $670,145,518 WW
BvS: $874,362,803 WW

Now could you argue that BvS underperformed? Of course - it should have crossed into billion dollar territory but did the studio still make a good ass profit? Yeah. They did. Unless you think 300 million profit is bad.

WB would KILL for returns like that right now. I loved Gunn’s Suicide Squad film but it lost WB hundreds of millions of dollars lol. Here’s to hoping his Superman is much more successful.

@TheLobster - same, I preferred Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie compared to Ayer’s but it made little money. Granted I think releasing it same day on HBOMax hurt it too, but I still don’t think it was going to make a huge profit.

@Arthorious - day and date release definitely hurt the film but jfc it performed reaaaaally bad lol

Well , I’m glad Snyder and i atleast agree on this…

I always forget him & Gunn know each other since Snyder directed the Dawn of The Dead remake in 2004 ( it was his feature debut) and James wrote it.

They shouldn't have mentioned MoS as a reference for that X-Men episode, now he's summoned again.

"... if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct"

Oh the irony! If he actually believed that he would have paired Man of Steel with the Dark Knight films and both he and the studio would be way better off. Is he not the same guy who turned Batman into a sociopathic murderer and unhinged brute and Superman into a bi-polar basket case in BvS?

According to several interviews I've read from different directors, studios many times pick a director who has their own unique style and then want the directors to give up their creative control and do it the studio's way.

It's like the studios didn't do their homework and instead just picked a director because their movie made good money.

Reverence and mythology correct are very subjective, as everybody consumes different media. And it's indeed why his version didn't work for the masses, as it wasn't very appetizing for them

I enjoy all of Snyder's movies, but what do I know? I'm not one of the cool kids who hates everything nowadays.
