5 Superhero Movies That Deserved More Awards Success...Including Best Picture Wins!

We're in the midst of awards season, and with superhero movies again mostly overlooked, we're reflecting on five titles that were deserving of more success...including the all-important "Best Picture" win!

We're currently in the midst of awards season, but it's not shaping up to be a particularly good year for superheroes.

While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett is scoring her fair share of "Best Supporting Actress" nominations and wins, the genre has been frozen out for the most part. That's not overly surprising after a year that saw the release of movies like Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Adam, but we've grown used to comic book movies being overlooked.

While the likes of The Dark Knight, Black Panther, and Joker have been recognised at major awards shows, there are a number of titles we think have been unfairly overlooked. That's a reference to the Oscars and beyond, and we've now singled out some of our favourites that should have been acknowledged...and perhaps even won "Best Picture."

To take a look through this feature, all you guys need to do is click the "Next" button below!

5. The Avengers

maxresdefault

The Avengers picked up the expected VFX nominations, but it feels like this movie's impact wasn't appreciated anywhere near as much as it should have been.

Marvel Studios launched a number of solo superhero franchises at a time comic book movies were primarily bad. They then successfully brought those characters together - in the midst of being acquired by Disney - in a blockbuster helmed by someone best known for their television work. And it was magnificent.

Grossing over $1 billion at a time that number was a rarity, The Avengers was, in many ways, the true opening chapter of the MCU as we know it. While we're not saying the cast should have been on stage accepting a "Best Picture" Oscar in 2013 - was Argo really that much better? - this was a special movie.

It may be small in scale compared to Avengers: Endgame, but if you were there on opening day, you know what we're talking about.

4. Spider-Man 2

MV5-BMz-Y2-ODk4-Nm-Ut-OTVm-Ni00-ZTdk-LTlm-OWYt-Mm-E2-OWVh-NTU2-OTVk-Xk-Ey-Xk-Fqc-Gde-QXVy-MTQx-Nz-Mz

An Oscar-winner for its VFX, Spider-Man 2 is a perfect example of how superhero movies are typically only recognised in technical categories. This groundbreaking sequel from filmmaker Sam Raimi was released way back in 2004, but is still widely considered one of the best comic book adaptations to ever grace the silver screen.

Yes, the main character was clad in spandex, but how many other 2004 movies spring to mind that offered the experience of swinging through New York City. Million Dollar Baby?!

That was obviously a fantastic film in its own right. However, between Alfred Molina's terrific performance as Doctor Octopus, a strong story about love and friendship, and visuals unlike anything we'd seen on screen before, Spider-Man 2 is a movie that serves as a compelling reminder of why blockbusters deserve to be acknowledged as well.

The legacy this sequel has really does speak for itself.

3. Watchmen

91gzg0-Kq-YBL-AC-SL1500

Well, this one is going to be controversial, isn't it?

The removal of the squid aside (which actually wasn't in any way a detriment to the story being told), Watchmen did a fantastic job of adapting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's iconic graphic novel. While it's true Zack Snyder's style isn't for everyone - that "Hallelujah" scene was quite something, alright - this movie was undeniably visually stunning.

We're not necessarily saying Watchmen is Oscar-worthy, but it feels like the movie was overlooked solely because the story isn't overly easy to digest. It's dense, sometimes a tad too complicated and convoluted, and brutally violent, but it all comes together in a way that just...works.

Snyder successfully adapted a comic book many believed could never be brought to the big screen, and he did so by bringing those panels to life on screen. That was a phenomenal achievement and this is a film you should consider revisiting.

2. Avengers: Endgame

MV5-BZGFm-YWU1-OGUt-Ym-Ux-NS00-N2-E4-LTkx-Ym-Mt-ZGYx-M2-Nm-Yzhj-Zj-Jk-Xk-Ey-Xk-Fqc-Gde-QXVy-Njg2-Nj-

We feel like we're beating a dead horse here, but Avengers: Endgame absolutely should have received a greater number of "Best Picture" nominations. This three-hour epic works in every respect, telling a powerful, moving story that culminates by celebrating the most successful franchise of all time.

Whether it's that breathtaking Portals scene or the death of Iron Man, there were moments here we will never forget, and how many Oscar-winners that created such a visceral emotional reaction within you spring to mind as quickly as this movie does?

Avengers: Endgame wasn't just a movie; it was an experience.

Robert Downey Jr. definitely deserved more recognition, as did Josh Brolin for his layered, fascinating portrayal of Thanos. Of course, both were covered in visual effects, so it was easy for the 2019 movie to be overlooked and, in many cases, ignored.

1. The Batman

What the hell happened here?

The Batman opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews last March, but in the months that followed, it was largely forgotten. We're not sure whether to blame short attention spans or a level of familiarity with this character that meant the movie all too quickly blurred into the background.

Either way, the fact it isn't getting any real love during awards season is legitimately shocking, though perhaps not as infuriating as the fact Michael Giacchino's score has been largely ignored. That's beyond baffling.

Given its adult tone, a compelling detective story, and fantastic performances from top to bottom, we see no reason why The Batman isn't front and centre at shows like the Golden Globes and Oscars. Perhaps Warner Bros. Discovery didn't have enough money to push it when "For Your Consideration" time rolled around, but the Batverse definitely deserves better.

@SaintCrow - Avengers:Infinity War and Captain America:The Winter Soldier are the two best Marvel movies.

I don't think we'll ever see another movie like The Winter Soldier from Disney Marvel ever again.

"The Batman opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews last March, but in the months that followed, it was largely forgotten."

I think you answered your own question there buddy. It was forgotten. Another way of saying that is it wasn't memorable.

Man, this movie is so overrated. It was just an ok Batman movie, that was admittedly a pretty decent detective story (even if the two detectives weren't very good at their detective jobs or riddles) but then the 3rd act just turned into the usual mob of faceless, dispoable bad guys trying to blow something up cliche nonsense.

@SATW42 - I enjoyed The Batman but I agree that it wasn't all that memorable and with time the drabness and just how average Batman & Gordon were as detectives, rings louder and louder. That being said, it's a more than adequate kicking off to a larger universe and its Batman is one of the stronger portrayals (minus small aspects of Bruce himself that I had an issue with), and it houses the best Gotham City since Batman 89 (I did notice as the movie went on Gotham was confined to like three different sets/locations only).

However, there was something "missing" about it. Almost an unquantifiable element that made Batman Begins what it was, TDK, Batman 89. And I'm a little hard on TDK as it's not a great Batman movie, but it's an incredible Batman Rogue showcase (for the Joker).

@SATW42 - it definitely was just an ok Batman movie.

@GhostDog - I liked it, I just didn't watch it and think "GIVE IT ALL THE AWARDS!" What I DO remember about the movie (besides an hour of it's 3 hour runtime being dedicated to a language barrier in a riddle) was that I felt all 3 hours of it's runtime. Say what you will about Marvel movies, Infinity War and Endgame didn't FEEL like 3 hour movies. This did.

I feel like other MCU movies deserved awards before Endgame. But I'm not the biggest fan of Endgame, either.

@CorndogBurglar - same. Civil war is miles better than endgame in my opinion
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/23/2023, 3:13 PM
@MyCoolYoung - I would agree with that. As well as Winter Soldier and Infinity War.

There aren't many Phase 1-3 movies I didn't enjoy to some extent. But Endgame was certainly not at the top of my list.
HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 1/23/2023, 3:17 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Endgame is not a great movie. The entire Second Act dealing with the time travel goes on for too long and it's mostly awful filler, "Hey, remember that time when we did that thing!" Chris Farley Show nonsense.

Infinity War is the zenith of the MCU. It's all been downhill from there.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 1/23/2023, 3:19 PM
@CorndogBurglar - agreed. Especially phase 3. Phase 3 was really something special. Endgame isn't a bad movie I feel. I like that it was like a love letter to fans, but it was just cool i

@CorndogBurglar - I personally disliked endgame. It was just a meh film overall and can never understand the love it gets over the vastly superior, imo, infinity war.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/23/2023, 3:57 PM
@HistoryofMatt - For me it was the time travel stuff. It really didn't make any sense, I feel like they didn't really follow their own time travel rules they set up, Captain America's fate was so confusing and poorly thought out that people working on the movie all provided different explanations for it for over a year after the movie came out, and worst of all, it kind of made the Avengers look like selfish prices that were willing to create alternate dimensions by changing their past and then leaving those timelines to their own demise.

Just so much wring with it.

@CorndogBurglar - Endgame was a mess. So badly written.
Rastarapha
Rastarapha - 1/23/2023, 8:15 PM
@HistoryofMatt -

Infinity war was just MCU characters on the same screen with no interractions between them

At least Endgame tells something with the conclusion of Tony and Steve arc and developp some secondary characters

The rush to get the infinity stones when Feige had 18 movies to set them in a better way was weird

And the movie is already ugly 4 years after its release (this critics can also be made for Endgame)

As much as I enjoyed all these movies, only Spider-Man 2 really deserved some big award recognition. The other movies are too big of scope I feel (ensemble or length).

Winter Soldier is perfect though. That movie was a great spy/military flick. Only reason it's a comic book movie is because Steve Rogers decides they have to wear their branded uniforms for the final fight.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/23/2023, 4:11 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I'm really hoping Secret Invasion helps recapture some of the feeling from Winter Soldier. The trailers look amazing and give me that same kind of vibe. So fingers crossed.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 1/23/2023, 4:49 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Do you also feel that something like The Lord of the Rings trilogy didn't deserve the awards they won for the same reason? Not trying to pull any "gotcha", genuily asking.
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/23/2023, 4:57 PM
@FinnishDude - i think the difference is that the lord of the rings films were closer to true epics like ben-hur than more disposable popcorn fare like the avengers. they’re both big blockbusters, but the film-making on display isn’t really comparable imo
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/23/2023, 5:38 PM
@FinnishDude - honestly, you did have a "gotcha" until @tmp3 stepped in.

That said, I do agree with tmp3. Those movies had something else on display. To stay in line with my original comment: I'd say it is its scope. Not ensemble or length, but in scale.
marvel72
marvel72 - 1/24/2023, 8:53 AM
@CorndogBurglar - It does have a Winter Soldier vibe to it but we both know what Disney Marvel are like when it comes to Disney Plus content.

The Dark Knight not being on this list completely invalidates this list.

But congrats, you got me to click on this garbage. So shame on me.

@HistoryofMatt - dark knight and spider-verse are the only ones i can realistically see as being actual snubs
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/23/2023, 5:39 PM
@HistoryofMatt @tmp3 - I think neither were snubbed. Both won in the categories where they mattered most in my opinion: best supporting role and animation
pitbull76
pitbull76 - 1/24/2023, 12:17 AM
@HistoryofMatt - The fact that The Dark Knight is not number 1 on this list is sad.In fact it caused so much outrage for being snub I believe they raised the number of pictures nominated for the award the next year.

FireandBlood

I don’t care how many panels it recreated on screen, Snyder’s Watchmen missed the entire point of the comic and deserves no awards.
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/23/2023, 3:21 PM
@PlusUltra - a superior watchmen adaptation already cleaned up the awards circuit
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/23/2023, 4:16 PM
@PlusUltra - How did it miss the point of the comics? I think it did a very good job. They just changed the ending to make it look like Dr Manhattan caused the explosion instead of a giant interdimension squid monster.

Which kind of makes sense considering everyone was already very worried and scared of Dr Manhattan. It made more sense to lean into that fear than creating some weird fake monster that appeared for 2 seconds then exploded.

And it's a different medium. They couldn't deconstruct the comics industry the same way the comics did because it's a film. So they deconstructed the superhero genre of films. That's why all their costumes were the big rubber versions. Why Ozy had nipples on his suit. Everything was over-stylized, even for Zack Snyder. The action scenes were over the top.

Anything else missing, like the side plot of the lesbian girls, or the prison psychologist, or the newspaper guys didn't have anything to do with the actual plot of the comic. So missing those pieces really didn't change anything.
