DA 5 BLOODS Director Spike Lee Would Consider Helming A Superhero Movie Given The "Right Opportunity"

Spike Lee is widely considered one of the greatest living directors, and many fans would love to see his take on any number of comic book characters. Would he be interested in helming a superhero film?

Spike Lee is one of the most prolific and well-regarded directors working today, with a superb filmography to boast off. While he has covered a lot of different genres over the course of his 40-year career, he tends to stick to more grounded, dramatic fare, so it's hardly surprising that he's never helmed a superhero movie.

That doesn't mean he wouldn't consider it, though!

During an interview with EW, Lee was asked if we'd ever see him try his hand at a superhero film, even though "some of your directing brethren have dismissed Marvel movies as not legit filmmaking."

"I have nothing against Marvel," he replied. "I grew up reading Spider-Man comic books. To me, DC Comics was always corny... [Laughs] I'm just saying. I was all about Marvel. If the right opportunity comes across, I'm not campaigning for it, but I will give it consideration."

The closest Lee has come to the comic book genre was his re-adaptation of Japanese manga Oldboy, which was not very well received and one of his only notable flops. There was a rumor doing the rounds back in 2018 that he was attached to direct one of Sony's planned Spider-Man spinoffs, Nightwatch, but nothing ever came of it.

Would you like to see Spike Lee direct a superhero/comic book film or TV series? If so, which ones? Let us know in the comments.

I'm guessing that nightwatch movie he was supposed to direct for Sony is dead & gone huh?

@TheRealMandarin - Kind of a shame tbh, he really could've put his own spin on a character that no one really knew (in a similar way that the Blade movie put their own spin on the source material).

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - If he was reading comics in the 60's there was a clear difference in the companies, even I did grow up loving the DC characters more. By the 70's, DC woke up and started writing stories that were a bit more grown up and less-Lois tries to find out Superman's identity, Jimmy turns into a Giant Turtle-Man or Bat-Mite vs Mr. Mxyzptlk. Nevertheless, I feel your pain.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I gotta say growing up with DC in the 70s this was true for me as well. they had the justice league where these uber powerful people sat around a big table... it was just silly. batman was far more grounded. the focus of his stories didn't center around the batcave... he was a detective and worked to solve something. people that are uber powerful don't seem to solve anything... they sit there week after wk while villains keep coming... they didn't change the world for the better, didn't do so much that seemed within their power levels. they were very much just a way to sell toys instead of tell good stories. people started writing serious stories for them much later.
At the same time Stan Lee had marvel way more invested in the politics of life/country/ethnicity, etc. It was way more real. The question of why you are a hero, what makes you a hero really resonated with me and so i stuck with marvel most of the time.

@aresww3 - So the 'Da 5 Bloods' only because Spike Lee said something you like was corny? You guys need thicker skin before coming on the internet smh.

@RitoRevolto - Dude, I love spike lee. It was a joke. he's one of my favorite directors. I'm also a huge dc fanboy.

Da 5 bloods was pretty bad though, but he's also made masterpieces like 25th hour and do the right thing. Both better than any dc movie ever made to date.

Blade or Luke Cage reboot.

I think Marvel really connected with NYC readers back then becasue a lot of heroes operated out of the city. My older cousin in Harlem, and his friends even from different boroughs, only read Marvel growing up.

Compared to Lee's previous work I'd be bias and say give him a Marvel Knights.

A Damage Control movie would probably best suit his style.

Hot take, but I’ll pass. Spike isn’t what he used to be. Black Kkklansman had great actors but I thought it was shot terribly and had weird editing and writing and I just came out bored. Have not seen Da 5 Bloods yet
