SCREAM Star Melissa Barrera Explains Why She Isn't Rushing To Join The Marvel Or DC Universes (Exclusive)

Talking to us about her memorable role in Scream, Melissa Barrera explains why she's not rushing to join In The Heights co-stars Leslie Grace or Anthony Ramos by signing on for a major superhero franchise.

Scream is now available for purchase on Digital, and comes loaded with plenty of killer bonus content. The terror then comes home on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 5 (and Paramount+ on March 8), and to mark the occasion, we recently sat down for a chat with star Melissa Barrera.

We'll bring you the full interview soon, but with Barrera's In The Heights co-stars Leslie Grace and Anthony Ramos signing up for superhero projects, we wondered if Melissa might be hoping to do the same. While she didn't outright dismiss the idea, it sounds like the actress has other ambitions.

"Um…I mean, never say never, right? I feel like it’s cool, but I also have other things in mind for my career," Barrera explains in the video above. "I also have this…I love superhero movies, but I also feel like they’ve kind of taken over the industry. I think we need variety. I think we need other things as well to maintain a balance in the universe!"

Shortly after In The Heights was released, Grace landed the lead role in Batgirl, while Ramos boarded the next Transformers movie and signed up to play the villain in Ironheart. Considering Barrera delivered star-making performances in both the Warner Bros. musical and Scream, we'd have expected her to be next, but no one can blame the actress for wanting to take some risks moving forward.

We're definitely excited to see what the future holds in store for Barrera after playing Sam Carpenter in the latest Scream movie, and she'll next be seen in Bed Rest and Breathe.

@Waddles - Things are only illegal if you get caught...or something like that.

That's what VPNs and running through 2 different proxy servers is for anyway.

She was the weakest part of Scream 2022, IMO. The movie was quite good otherwise. It really didn't need the legacy cast in hindsight. RIP Dewey.

I'd be interested in seeing a breakdown of how many superhero movies come out per year vs other genres. I've always thought there was enough variety for everyone

I really liked scream. It was fun AF and miles better than scream 3 and 4.

But she was awful as the main character. I need to see it again but I remember kinda cringing at some of her scenes. Her sister in the film was fantastic!

@AmazingFILMporg

Jenny Ortega did really well...she's also in TI West's 'X' coming out in 2 and a half weeks. That movie looks like a must-watch.

One of the pods I listened to said it's "the best sequel to Texas Chainsaw" we've gotten. Got those vibes from the trailer, too.

@AmazingFILMporg - Dude, I came here to say the same thing. I was in shock at how horrific her acting was. I wish her sister would have been the lead instead. She was great.

Wait. This shit actress with one expression on her face through an entire movie somehow thinks Marvel would even want to be in business with her? Tell us when the spaceship’s landed there sweetie.
