Writers Guild Of America's Officially On Strike - What Impact Will It Have On Future Marvel And DC Projects?

As expected, the Writers Guild of America is now on strike, but what does this mean for your favourite Marvel and DC TV shows and movies? It's still early days, but here's our guide to what's happening.

There's been talk of this happening for several months now, but the Writers Guild of America is officially on strike as of midnight last night.

As with most things, it ultimately came down to money, with the Guild unable to come to acceptable terms with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The former was seeking a new contract that would increase pay and benefits for writers by $429 million over three years, only to receive an offer of $86 million in return.

Another, arguably even more important goal, is ensuring the art of writing itself is preserved. Those demands range from stopping projects being "written" by A.I. to the role of writers' rooms from start to finish on TV shows (which is complicated by the fact some have only a single credited scribe).

So, what does this mean for you, the fans?

In the first instance, late-night shows will shut down, and if this strike lasts as long as the last one in 2007 - 2008 (100 days), then expect the fall premieres of your favourite network TV shows to be heavily delayed and seasons significantly shortened. Many streamers have episodes already in the bank due to how far in advance they're produced, but work on something like The Last of Us season 2, for example, has now halted.

In terms of Marvel and DC, a strike of a few weeks is unlikely to have a major impact but could still be a headache for both Marvel Studios and DC Studios. For the time being, James Gunn is no longer able to work on Superman: Legacy, while production will also be halted on Blade's rewrites and the next two Avengers movies.

A movie like Thunderbolts, which presumably has a mostly completed script, could begin production in June as planned. However, with no writers on hand to make last-minute changes, the creative process will be heavily disrupted.

Many projects like those are far out enough that the impact of this strike could be minimal, but if this strike lasts for months, release date delays are all but guaranteed.

Needless to say, we'll keep you updated as this situation develops.

Damn. The industry already took a bad hit during COVID. Hopefully this strike doesn’t drag out for long.

They're problem isn't paying the writers, it's picking ones that are worth more than a nickel

If Jeff Loveness goes on strike this might actually be a good thing.

They should hire me for X-Men. I'm not on strike. They don't even have to pay me if it means I get to write the X-Men world for the movies.

@CorndogBurglar - feels like you've been on strike though. Been waiting weeks for Part 4!

@CorndogBurglar - If you want to be hunted down by the Writers Guild at some point, get to writing...

@bkmeijer1 - Haha, I know man, sorry. Work got really crazy! I've got 2 full trilogies in the hopper, all planned out. Just need to find some time to get part 4 in. Maybe Friday.

@MosquitoFarmer - Seriously though, I always wondered this. Don't you have to be a member of the Writer's Guild for this to even matter. Surely not every writer on earth is a member, right?

Blade is going through hell. Damn shame just as it got a good and trusted screenwriter working on the draft

@GhostDog - Unfortunately it doesn't matter who is writing it as long as the idea is to still have Blade's daughter take over on the mantle in the first movie.

Even taking the corpses of Edgar Allen Poe, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickenson, F Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and George Orwell and flesh-crafting them into one super-writer wouldn't make that a good movie.

@CorndogBurglar - when was that stated to be the idea? I know they mentioned her showing up not talking over

This should be interesting. I’d love for some Lost level writing all across the board “and then he came back to life. Dead” “so, a zombie?” “No, dead” “a ghost?” “A NOTHING, damn, are you the Scab? I’m the Scab. Now let me do their job”

@TheWalkingCuban - I can almost guarantee that scabs will do a better job especially with Marvel and Star Wars movies.

Hell, My concept that I posted on here years ago for Indiana Jones 5 was very good and even included an adult Short Round.
It was almost prescient since Ke Huy Quan won the Oscar and if they had employed my concept they could have capitalized on his recent success.

@TyrantBossMedia - and he never thanked you for it. It’s ok man every dog has his dame. Oh this gas station could not come at a better time, turtlehead? Turtleshell more like. But look, I have no hopes for the movie industry, I’ll just take what’s good while it keeps coming, like John wick. I just don’t expect quality at all now, but that makes it so much better when I do get it.

@TheWalkingCuban - who was going to thank me for it?
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/2/2023, 11:13 AM
@TyrantBossMedia - No one. I was kiddin. And that’s just a sample of my writing. I can pull people into my web of hernia mesh fraud, complete with a falsified medical record and everything… until they ask for a picture of your ID, cuz obviously, you have to be 20 years older. But I can’t get ID’s, I’m not that cool. See? This stuff writes itself
