Emma Stone as Frankenstein's Monster?
Deadline reports that acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is set to helm an adaptation of Alasdair Gray's bestselling novel, Poor Things, which, in some respects, serves as a modern-day retelling of Mary Shelley's classic novel.
It sounds like this take on the story will lean more heavily into the book's Frankenstein influences, however, as it's described as "a Victorian tale of love, discovery and scientific daring, Poor Things tells the incredible story of Belle Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist."
Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man, Cruella) is on board to play Belle, and while Willem Dafoe's (Spider-Man, The Lighthouse) role has yet to be confirmed, it's assumed he'll be playing the scientist.
Tony McNamara will adapt the script, while Element Pictures will produce along with Stone and Lanthimos for Film 4 and Searchlight.
Lanthimos, who was nominated for a Best Director Academy Award for The Favourite, is also said to be working on an adaptation of the 1964 Jim Thompson novel Pop. 1280, but it's been a while since we had any updates on the project.
