Kevin Feige Talks More About Marvel's 2016/2017 Plans; Confirms NAMOR Is Still At Universal

While it was believed the rights to Namor the Submariner had returned to Marvel, Kevin Feige has now confirmed that they remain at Universal. He also discusses their approach to deciding which movies will be released in 2016 and 2017 and teases Hawkeye's larger role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Talking to Empire Magazine at the recent D23 Expo, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige cleared up a few rumours and teasingly addressed the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked when we should expect to hear some solid news on which characters will be filling those recently announced 2016 and 2017 release date slots, he said: "Next spring is when we really sit down and start to decide what we announce for 2016 and 2017." So, in that case, it could be as late as next year's San Diego Comic-Con when we find out! Either way, Feige was quick to point out that he's still keen to exploit the popularity of the Hulk ("I think we have something special with our Mark Ruffalo Banner, and we'd love to see where we could take his stories"), adding that the Green Goliath will have "a significant role" in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Speaking of which, he's not the only member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes who will have a big role in the sequel. So will Hawkeye! "Joss has a great storyline in mind for him that shows a deeper side and further fleshes out our favourite archer." Finally, Feige added that there are still no plans to introduce Ant-Man and Wasp in the movie, adding that when it comes to their next wave of movies, "There are three or four slots. We've got six or seven things going. We've got to choose which four will go. It's a Battle Royale!" Will one of them be Namor? Nope. "That's at Universal."

If Universal does decide to make a movie they better connect it with the marvel cinematic universe

So Iron Man creates Ultron, Hawkeye & Black Widow promised a bigger role, Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch introduced, now Hulk with have a significant role.

Happy for Hulk but it seems like everyone is having a bigger role.

If Universal has Namor what was the point of that nod to the character in Iron Man 2 on that board that showed possible locations of potential Avengers?

Looks like Thor will be pushed into the background in Avengers: Age of Ultron then. There's been no mention of what role he plays at all. Though, I could be wrong.
Hopefully in Phase 3 they could begin to create more and more cross-overs through the MCU to bond it firmly together, allowing each Avenger or super-hero to have at least one movie in the space of about 3. Who knows? I hope the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with the Avengers one day, maybe to battle Thanos.
They're the experts! I can't wait.

Screw Hawkeye and Widow and Magneto's brats as well. Give the sequel more of what it actually needs. More Cap, and more Thor.

Huh, I thought for sure Namor was back with Marvel. But here's where I'm confused at: Back in '08 where both Iron-Man and The Incredible Hulk were released, TIH was still with Universal at the time and yet they both coexisted in the same cinematic universe, right? I mean, could they do the same for Namor if they ever wanted to establish the characters within the MCU? I may have missed a few things or may be wrong on how I'm thinking about this.

Age of Ultron seems like it is going to be really jam packed with stuff... Is no one concerned? Why arent you worried about how overblown this film could become eh?

Universal have been on the rise recently, I think they're the top grossing studio this year and have had the most $100M openings, wouldn't be surprised if they give a Namor movie a shot in the near future, they would probably want another franchise, they only have about 2 or 3 and make it in a similar way to the likes of Hercules and 300 as the failings of Hulk and The Incredible Hulk would probably deter them from making it a pure superhero type film.

I think Universal had some Thor distribution or something. And they certainly have Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Can't forget the 8-Bit Universal logo.
