Quickly, off the top of your head, name three movies that had at least two female characters that talk to each other at some point about something other than a man. This is the Bechdel test, and movies that passed did exceptionally better than those that failed. Hit the jump for more details.

Quickly, off the top of your head, name three movies that had at least two female characters that talk to each other at some point about something other than a man. There is a high probability this probably came easy to you because movies like Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Conjuring, The Heat, Frozen, Hunger Games 2, among many others, all passed the criteria. This year, the combined intake of movies that passed the Bechdel test, the criteria being the three I just listed, earned more at the box office than the combined intake of those movies that failed. Among the failures you can count Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Pacific Rim.

Considering that women are a HUGE portion of the audience that go to see movies, and a demographic which for most of film history have been poorly represented, this news seems to indicate that Hollywood is finally getting around to changing that. However, while women may be getting a bigger spotlight in the movies, this doesn't seem to be the case behind the camera. All of these films were directed by men, with the exception being Frozen which was co-directed by Jennifer Lee. I suppose this new age nonsense of women having representation in Hollywood must be taken with one babystep at a time.

The chart below is taken courtesy from Vocativ.com. Among the more debatable choices were The Hobbit because it actually added a female character. And it was mentioned post release, that the love triangle was added in reshoots because of "studio request." Meanwhile Gravity only has two characters in it, and thus is impossible to pass. Pacific Rim failed, but never actually fell in love with or became the reward for Charlie Hunnam's character. Nevertheless, the results have shown an uplifting and am excited to see how the years go by seeing more and more feminism in our entertainment.

^^This test have been going on for years idiot. It's a study piece to gauge whether or not how much screen time women deserve on screen. LOL

No seriously it's just a research.

Seriously? I could take any random metric and divide 2013's movies in half and claim some bogus theory, like maybe audiences are drawn to movies that have more than 2 vowels in it, or anything equally random and pointless..............

I always thought the bechedel was pure crap. Just because there isn't a female character, doesn't mean it's not fair to women, it just means there are no female characters.

If a movie is promoting the idea that women are lesser, then that movie is not fair to women.

@Firg, it is research based, but alot of people use it to condemn movies for being sexist. Which some that fail are, but some that fail aren't. Just like passing the bechedel test doesn't exclude the film from sexism.

Simply...Who Gives A Shit?
Make good movies, don't waste time with nonsense like who's talking to who & the gender of so-and-so.

The lead can be female if the story call for it but don't specifically make it a woman to sell tickets.

So if a movie about the bravery about the last woman on Earth came out, it wouldn't be supporting feminism according to this test.

MOS question for those with good memory, the only women talking part I remember was Loos to Martha about Clark and Lois with Faora about supes again I think. I don't like watching movies over again for small details like that lol

Man of Steel? Only times I remember two female characters talking were when Lois spoke to Martha about Clark (so two women speaking about a man) and when Lois said "sorry" to Jenny at the end after suggesting Steve Lombard should ask an intern out instead of her - would that count? It's one word, and while it's not about a man per-se, it's in response to a man... I don't know...
