EDITORIAL: Do we need another Avengers trailer?

This site is being overloaded with meaningless interviews with the cast of the Avengers only rehashing previous interviews. Is another trailer needed before the release date? And if so, how soon?

Every day, a new article is up with the likes of Jeremy Renner or Tom Hiddleston speaking of "how great it is a feeling to see all these heroes together, in one room." Scroll down to the comments section, and what do we see? Comments like: "Woo! Sounds great! Bring on the new trailer!", or others that are more cynical, such as "Wow, they're not releasing any info about the movie. Come on Marvel, give us a new trailer!". But do we need one?

The reasoning to most of us wanting a new trailer to be released is, to put it frankly, we want another big secret spoiled for us. Really? If you look in the past, by checking the right sources you could have predicted what the ending was for both Marvel Studios movies last year. For the First Avenger, we knew it would end with the bomber scene, Steve waking up in modern times, and then an Avengers teaser at the end. For Thor, we knew that Loki would summon the Destroyer and that Thor would defeat it and stop Loki.

But, in the pursuit of fairness, a good bit of both of these movies were clouded to us. For example: Bucky's early death, and the destruction of the Bifrost. Also, Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class leaks were pretty much nonexistent. We did know we would see the beginning of Sinestro's fall and that Xavier would become paralyzed, though. But, were these so hard to predict? In fact, as a comic reader, we should have known the endings to every single one of them, no leaks, no secret tapes, but through watching the trailers.

The aforementioned statement brings me to my next point. Would a new trailer not just spoil so much of the movie's secrets for us? So many of us long to see Loki's army, but I would rather not know until I walk into the theater on May 4th. Why? Because surprises are such a good thing for such a predictable genre like the Comic Book Movie. It's not like we do not know enough about this film, is it? *Cough cough* Thanos, Loki's army, Cosmic Cube, *Cough cough*. But do none of us care about spoilers?

There we go. We don't care about the spoilers. I would like surprises, but many of us don't. People claim to enjoy spoilers so they can enjoy the storytelling more, and focus less on the plot or worrying about who dies or who survives. As comic fans, we know how it will end. Like this: The Avengers stop Loki's army, take in or kill Loki, and become national heroes. I am 99.99% sure this is how the film will conclude, with some room for unforeseen variables like an unexpected character death. We as comic fans don't care if this is what happens, though, is my point; we want to see how it is delivered. We want to see how well they adapt the stories we undoubtedly grew up with.

So, I have come up with a compromise, of sorts. Instead of us watching the trailers and leaking the movie one-by-one, see the film multiple times. The first viewing to see how the story unfolds, and then the second, third, or so on, to go back and see all the clues that were left and how they came together, and realize how a brilliant of a film it will be. What do you say? Spoilers or no spoilers? Sound off in the usual place.

yes, we need a new trailer? how soon? Late February at the earliest, because once it premieres it will flood the stations, and people will get sick of it, thus lowering the anticipation of the movie's release. mid march is probably when we're getting it, with several shorter tv spots popping up throughout april.

some spoilers are good to build excitement, but too many can ruin it. Thor to me was a let down, because the first 3 quarters of the movie played out exactly as I had expected, and it felt like i had seen it before, so nothing new suprised me all that much

Marvel should release a super bowl tv spot for the Avengers.

You have a bloody great point. I knew the vast majority about "Iron Man 2" because I watched almost all of the TV spots and everything. I was a little more hesitant about Thor, though. Ya know? I wanted some surprise with the film, and my lockdown was successful.

They need a new trailer sometime this month - do an early TV Spot for the superbowl and then actually start with the TV spots about 3 weeks before the movie releases.

Trailers only reveal spoilers when they are not done right. They need to release a new trailer because its good for the marketing.

I'm sure Marvel is going to make action figures of Loki's army, so naturally I want to be introduced to the army through a trailer before some crummy Made in China figurine.

With regard to the argument about 'meaningless interviews' rehashing stuff we have heard a thousand times just so people can comment "Wow! Sounds Great!" is kind of the point of the site. Every bit of news, no matter how small, should end up somewhere on this site. And then we fans can ignore/enjoy as much as we like.

As for spoilers - I have always felt we have to take individual responsibility over that. Whenever I see a spoiler I blame no one else but myself - though I do try to avoid them.

If we were sensible and really wanted to enjoy the movies the only websites we would look at are the official ones promoting the film (with a quick look at the odd review to make sure we aren't wasting our money).

And with regard to another trailer - I think we do need one. The first one was a bit Ironman-centric for my tastes and I feel the general public will want to have their appetites wetted a bit more.

It is possible for a new trailer to show some more about the film without giving away spoilers. But I guess it is at the disgression of each individual what information they want to read/watch. I chose not to watch all of the Captain America and Thor spots. Besides, in order to promote the film for everybody (not just comic fans) then a new trailer is definitely necessary.

I'd like a new trailer at the end of January... lol but I'm not sure if I want to watch it or not. But they do need to do several trailers and TV spots (they can cut down the amount of clips) just to promote it, because if they promote it right, it could be the biggest movie of the year! :)

They should release the 2nd trailer sometime in mid feb and 1 tv spot (made up of scenes from the 2 trailers) released in late march and none of those clips from the movie which are released a week or 2 before its release.
