Is Hollywood overdoing the Comic Book Movie?

Editorial Opinion

With The Avengers now officially out in the U.S. I’ve had a chance to see most of it (though I plan on trying again after work today) and so far it feels as if I’ve been fed a lot of (fill it in). To the Avengers credit though, it is now officially the most exciting movie on my list; replacing the Dark Knight Rises unfortunately. When this year began I was incredibly excited about the Dark Knight Rises, so-so about the Avengers (though Iron Man is my favorite comic book movie) and barely interested in the Amazing Spider Man (it’s just too soon man!). And maybe the “too soon” part is the problem. When this millennium began, we had a couple Batman movies to talk about, Blade was awesome, and Spider Man and the X-Men were debuting in what would become the explosion of Marvel stock (that I got a piece of – thanks to a little luck), and the era of mainstream comic book movies.

But after only a decade of this explosion, why does it seem like
everything has already been made when clearly we’ve only scratched the surface? With so much material to go with, you reboot Spider Man?-really? And as much as I love Nolan’s take on Batman, even that property is starting to feel a little cramped. If they’ve stayed away from the less popular and unknown characters for a reason I cannot see what it is. The history doesn’t show as much. Blade, I knew him as a kid; but did my wife? Nope; and she liked the movie more than I did. Sin City, The Watchmen, Red, Kick-Ass, The Spirit, Jonah Hex; all of those movies were awesome, and I’d watch any of them before I’d watch another Spider Man movie. And honestly, after watching the newest Batman trailer, I’m starting to feel that way about Nolan’s conclusion as well.

I know that The Dark Knight was released in 2008. So three years in between Batman Begins and the Dark Knight is actually a little less than the Dark Knight and TDKR; but why does it feel like the movies are just running in a continuous blurb now? The newest trailer for TDKR is just awful. Maybe after three bad trailers from that movie I’ve just given up; or maybe they’re just feeding us so much now that it’s all starting to look like crap. When the summer started I really thought that the Avengers were just the entre to what was going to be the summer of the Bat. Now I just feel like the Avengers are here, that’ll be fun, and then what?-Christmas.

Maybe if Hollywood spent more time developing characters, or taking chances, we’d get more space between the better known characters, and therefore, more build up and pay off in the end. The fact that I spent two hours reading about the new Prometheus film (and everything related to Greek Mythology later) on Wikipedia is a pretty good indicator to me that comic book films are slipping; because I could usually care less about horror films. And some will say that I’m not a big enough fan, or that all of these movies are great for fan-boys; maybe. Just be careful of what you wish for, because frankly, some of this stuff is starting to look so average it’s beginning to look like pizza on a Thursday instead of an epic night at IMAX.
But then again, I’m writing this on an empty stomach.

You make an article about overdone comic book movies and you put Batman as the avatar? Marvelite much?

Why are people still judging a movie based on the merit of its trailer? How many times do we have to get shoehorned into a terrible movie that has an over the top movie trailer? These days an over the top movie trailer usually means that the studio needs to rake in as much cash on opening weekend because once people find out it's crap the best trailer on earth won't save it. People keep saying that because they weren't pleased with the 3 trailers for TDKR that the movie will inevitably suck when everything about Nolan's track record screams otherwise. It's one thing to not like his movies and conclude that this will likely fall into the same category for you. But a trailer is meant to not give away all the juicy details of a movie. The more action a trailer gives you, the more the studio probably needs to convince you to see their movie because it will fall flat a week after it opens.

2012 is a great year for CBM's but after the Avengers I'm not really that excited for anything else coming this year. TDKR will be awesome but none of the trailers have really impressed me much to be honest not like BB or TDK did. I have a good feeling about The Amazing Spiderman and the trailers have been good but the excitment just isn't the same as it was when the 1st Raimi Spiderman was coming. What I really want to see is characters that are less known get their chance like BLACK PANTHER, LOBO, DR. STRANGE, NAMOR, FLASH and even WONDER WOMAN. WW really has the potential to be a truly epic film if done right.

I haven't seen all of Jonah Hex but it didn't seem to be as bad as people say it is. I'm not saying it is great but from what I have seen it didn't look that bad.

also Nolan never gives anything away in trailers n that's the beauty of it 4 me anyway. The trailer 4 TA gave away like half of the Hulk fight scene at the end (besides Hulk vs Loki n Hulk n Thor vs Leviathan) Instead of keeping the army hidden they should have kept the Hulk hidden n let ppl be amazed at the end of the movie.IDK just my 2 cents XD

Unfourtunately people like you excpect so much in so liitle time. Do you really expect the whole Marvel/DC universe to be laid before you already? CBM's really started to pick up after Batman Begins, and that's just now seven years ago. I really don't mind if hollywood takes their time, especially with the casts and directors we have now.

What is the purpose of this editorial? Are you complaining for the sake of complaining? Do you offer any meaningful suggestions?

You don't want Spider-man rebooted, I get that. I'm a bit indifferent on that subject simply because this is a character that has already been explored quite a bit in every medium, I mean Spider-man, along with Batman, is probably the most iconic comic book character. And as if to reinforce that point, I really don't feel too excited about The Dark Knight Rises because again, this is Batman - he's everywhere.

(I do like that they are going with a No Man's Land-ish setting - that's a bold, gutsy move.)

You said you saw most of the Avengers? Man, I held off on fluids and food like three hours in advance... that's right, I fasted for the Avengers. Well, I just got back and it definitely doesn't leave me wanting.

I think the problem is that we have been spoiled by the over-saturation of comic book movies coming out every year. I don't care if this pisses off any fanboys, but it's safe to say that the Avengers will be the Comic Book Movie of the year - because it is so fresh. It balances the humor and the action fantastically, the characters who you may have been expecting to be disappointed with - shine. It is also the first crossover film based on comics, AvP not withstanding.

I feel that because I was able to enjoy that movie in its entirety, I don't need anything more this year. Perhaps need is too strong a word.

Ok, update, finished Avengers. And yup, it was awesome. Ruffalo was cool, but to me Iron Man was still the guy where I was like, Ok, I gotta go watch the movies again (which I just finished doing I1 and I2, will watch Thor and CA next). But even reading some of the comments I feel like I'm not alone...too much and with me being a Batman fan, how am I not excited about this next film?

Do new characters, the same stuff is just getting played out man!

One other thing...I didn't care for Thors solo before, at all, but after watching the Avengers, how is this my favorite movie? People are sleeping on that character...there's so much you can do with him. Other planets, sci fi stuff plus action? Dude.

Hollywood has NEVER been original. Phantom of the Opera? Book. Frankenstein? Book. Dracula? Vlad the imapaler/book. Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Ed Gein. Harry Potter? Books.

Need I go on? Hollywood is the LEAST original market. Comic book movies arent going anywhere. Same as movies based on books and "true" events. They are here to stay. And I say...

Just bring it!

Hmmm, seems like most people dislike the TDKR trailer is they haven't got what wanted, for me the Avengers trailer was generic as any blockbuster movie, must stress I liked the movie. TDKR trailer wasn't about showing every fight scene it was about setting the tone and raising questions it was one of the better trailers I have seen for a summer movie. However does seem like the article should be called 'I don't like something so I will have a moan"

and @corndog if your only comment is to abuse someone's spelling then that is rather petty
