Expanding the MCU Without Cutting Off Older Franchises

Between two films per year and the necessity for sequels, Marvel's ability to expand (without cutting off the older franchises) will become severely limited. What would be the best course of action to avoid such an issue?

This is my first editorial, so feel free to offer me any future tips and tricks. I'm posting this here to offer my insights into what options Marvel Studios might take to expand their in film universe. Before I get to that however, let's take a look at the current trends in the MCU. For starters, what films already exist (or are planned) in that world:

2008 - Iron Man
2008 - The Incredible Hulk
2010 - Iron Man 2
2011 - Thor
2011 - Captain America: The First Avenger
2012 - The Avengers
2013 - Iron Man 3
2013 - Thor: The Dark World
2014 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy
2015 - Avengers: Age of Ultron
2015 - Ant-Man

Of these twelve films, six are "origin" stories, four are single character sequels, and two are ensemble crossover pieces. Note: I counted GOTG as an origin story, and from here on out I will refer to the Guardians team as a single character. If that puts you off at all, I apologize, but that's how I've chosen to proceed.

Now as lucky as we are to have this awesome web of stories and characters, we the fans, are never satisfied. We always want more, but the good news is that Marvel always wants to give us more. We want more heroes pulled from the comics, we want more sequels, and we want more ensemble pieces. The problem is that Marvel Studios has only just stabilized at two films per year. Kevin Feige has expressed interest in producing three films per year, but that is at least a few years away.

The problem that this causes is that we only have 6 feature carrying characters: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Guardians. Between two films per year and the necessity for sequels, Marvel's ability to expand (without cutting off the older franchises) will become severely limited. What would be the best course of action to avoid such an issue?

Let's now consider a few of the different options for Phase 3 of the MCU. We the fans have a lot of different ideas and we've also heard rumors of what may pop up. Here's a list of some of the possibilities, the rumors, and fan wishes:

Captain America 3
Thor 3
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Doctor Strange
Black Panther
Inhumans
Iron Man 4
Ms. Marvel
The Incredible Hulk 2

I'm sure you could think of more. But there is no way Marvel will be doing more than 6 films before Avengers 3. Even that seems like a stretch. But that doesn't mean we have to sacrifice all of those characters. And so here are my two suggestions to Marvel Studios:

1) On occasion, use established character sequels to introduce new super heroes. For example, introduce Black Panther in the third Captain America and then wait until the next "phase" to give BP a stand alone film.

2) Again, on occasion, give us partner movies of previously established characters, that can work as a sequel to both character franchises. For example, Marvel is hesitant to give us another Hulk film and they are also going to lose RDJ soon, so why not make the best of both situations and give us a Hulk & Iron Man partner movie in Phase 3.

Hulk_and_Iron_Man_-_Avenger

This would help Marvel increase the amount of characters we want to see, without drastically increasing the amount of films they produce each year. It would be the perfect growth plan as they work towards three films a year.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see team ups and obvious cross overs happen outside of the large ensemble films? I know I would. And this method doesn't have to dominate the majority of their films, either. One year the Hulk may be in a crossover, but then a few years later he can pop up in his own film. So on and so forth with all of the other characters as well. Leave your thoughts in the comments section. I'd love to see what you all have to say.

I agree and disagree. They could make 3 films a year if they wanted to. They just don't need to. It will keep them in the game longer instead of releasing all their goods in a course of 4-10 years. I'm sure they're trying to keep marvel studios alive forever. So they have time to build this universe. Just be patient. They have done a lot already and have more plans.

Great article. Hell yeah i'm looking optimistic for Marvel Studios and i'm looking forward to hearing about upcoming projects on the MCU.
Hulk and Iron Man team up film would be amazing.
Looking forward to The Inhumans and hopefully GOTG will be a success to warrant a sequel.

I dont see them doing a Iron Man and Hulk team up film. Why does everyone want to see that so bad anyway?

Another thing Marvel shouldn't be afraid to do, is to make films that might fit in before or during the previously established MCU. Not every movie needs to be the next chronological event. So long as they are careful about preventing inconsistencies, I think it would be rather interesting if they attempted this.

For example, why not make Ant-Man take place during the events of Iron Man 3, or something along those lines. They would be able to make some really cool references and fill in a lot of questions. Maybe that's why SHIELD was preoccupied during the Mandarin attack, maybe Scott Lang or Hank Pym had some sort of connection to AIM, so on and so forth. It would just be cool to see them retrofit something into the timeline and be able to experience parallel events.

@CharlesLord - I certainly can't speak for anyone else, but those are two of my favorites, especially in the MCU. And after the Avengers, I think Ruffalo and Downey would make a great duo.

@Humby They have already done that - the fifth MCU film (Captain America) was set 70 years before the first MCU film (Iron Man), as was the recent ' Agent Carter' One-Shot.

But I agree this is a good idea, especially if Ant-Man is partly set in the 1960's/70's. I would like to see a 1940's Namor film as this can be mostly underwater anyway!

They actually have an empty slot to pick for 2017...

Ant-Man - July 2015

Thor 3 - May 2016

Doctor Strange - July 2016

Captain America 3 - May 2017

Unknown; Ms. Marvel? Inhumans? - July 2017

Avengers 3 - May 2018

I think that like Phase One, Marvel will do 5 films before Avengers. The July 2017 spot CANNOT be Avengers 3 - it's the movie that makes up the trilogy, they'd definitely want a May release for the next year. Also, if Avengers 3 was released in 2017, filming would have to take place in 2016 which is only a year after Age of Ultron is released (cast wouldn't be up for that) and its probably the year that Evans will be shooting Cap 3. The good thing about all that is yes, after Cap and Thor 3, there will be 2 open slots for Phase Four (the ones I mentioned above + Runaways, Inhumans, Black Panther, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange sequels...).

I think Marvel are building towards a truely epic, universe spanning Thanos vs everyone story in 'Avengers 3' which will involve the Avengers, SHIELD, the Defenders, Guardians of the Galaxy and any other team that is introduced by that time (eg Inhumans).

In order to make sure all thisis set up and each team has got to the relevant point Marvel will likely have at least four if not six films in Phase 3. They also have the four upcoming Netflix shows (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones leading up to the Defenders), Agents of SHIELD and the One-Shots.

Therefore I think the only direct sequels we should have are 'Captain America 3' and 'Thor 3'.

The new films should be Doctor Strange and Black Panther.

I like the idea of Team-Up films or introducing new characters in an existing franchise.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy film can set up any new cosmic films (Inhumans, Ms. Marvel, Nova, Nova Corps etc) and they could also be part of the new film - eg GotG2 can also be a Ms Marvel film.

I'd quite like to see Captain America & Hulk team up; http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/SuperheroSpeculation/news/?a=80839
but also like the idea of Black Panther starting as a villain in Cap3.

Also One-Shots could be used to show what an established character is doing - so a Banner One-Shot for example

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ant-Man (origin)
Thor 3
Dr Strange (origin, and expand the magic/mystic side of the MCU, can involve an infinity stone)
Cap vs Black Panther (Fighting over an Infinity Stone currently in Wakanda)
GotG2/Inhumans (can involve an infinity stone)
Infinity Guantlet

@Kurne Your predictions look good.

I'm thinking if Avengers 3 is a massive scale Infinity Guantlet story then Phase 4 will scale it right down with Ant-Man 2, Heroes for Hire, Runaways, and any of the ones that missed out in Phase 3 like Ms Marvel etc. Plus that might be the time to do some films with period settings - early SHIELD, young Nick Fury etc.

Nice write up mate, your ideas make a lot of sense. I totally agree with the expansion of the universe through the introduction of new characters within existing franchises - but maybe not with the example you used. In my opinion Black Panther should either start with his own film, or pop up in Age Of Ultron as a game changer towards the end. Im not sure if he fits into the tone of Cap's solo films, but would love to see them go toe-to-toe with one another in one of the Avengers movies.

I would prefer introducing Ms Marvel in the Inhumans movie, which would be the cosmic movie of Phase 3. She could be the 'Star-Lord' character for audiences to empathize with (in this case maybe starting of as a SHIELD agent) - and they could be tied together by their shared Kree origins. Also the Guardians could pop up at some time as well in the movie, and maybe Ronan and Thanos too.

My hopeful Phase 3 is as follows:

Ant-Man (July, 2015) - Kinda see this as a conclusion to Phase 2 in truth

Thor 3 (May, 2016) - Can't argue with $620 million, plus Loki. He's getting a sequel. Hopefully it's Surtur/Enchantress.

Doctor Strange OR Black Panther (July, 2016) - Needs to be an original film, the sad thing is we'll likely only get one of the two. Strange will fit with the Infinity Stone theme, but Panther will be popular.

Cap 3 (May, 2017) - This is dependent on TWS box office this year, but most fans seem to think this is a given. Probably will wrap up the Red Skull storyline.

Inhumans (July, 2017) - Further expansion of the cosmic universe. Ms Marvel to star

Avengers 3 (May, 2018) - Thanos vs Everyone

@Minty Seems about right

@KOtheAlphaFlexXx Why not? It can also act as SHIELD/Avengers 2.5 film including some of the more grounded Avengers (Hawkeye etc)

@KOtheAlphaFlexXx Interesting, so it might look something like this;

Ant-Man - July 2015
Thor 3 - May 2016
Doctor Strange - July 2016
Unknown - May 2017
Unknown - July 2017
Avengers 3 - May 2018

Punisher should be introduced in the next Captain America film. Phase 3:
Ant Man: July 2015
Incredible Hulk 2: April 2016
Guardians of the Galaxy 2: August 2016
Doctor Strange: Christmas 2016
Thor 3: May 2017
Black Panther: August 2017
Captain America 3: April 2018
Avengers 3: July 2018

Actually Hulk 2 would be in May 2016

@KOtheAlphaFlexXx & mook - Makes a lotta sense there. Yeah at times I wouldn't mind they sacrifice a Cap 3 (at least for Phase 3), just so we can see some more expansion and new characters. That timeline you put mook seems fairly legit, with Black Panther, Dr Strange, Inhumans/Guardians 2 and Cap 3 vying for the 3 slots. I agree if Strange is one of them they wont put him the same year as Thor

@AlphaFlexXxKO & Minty
Thor has gone from Fantasy in the first film to Sci-Fi in the second film. Maybe Thor3 could feature Dr Strange and be more magical/mystical?

I guess we have to consider when the next four(?) Infinity Stones will be introduced; GotG, Thor3, Dr. Strange, Inhumans...?

mook - 1/16/2014, 1:53 AM
@Praetorian I would like Punisher to appear in the Netflix shows as he needs a more mature/gritty platform. His lack of powers would make him cheaper and more suited to a 'street level' show. He could be a reappearing character across two or more of the shows - tracked down by Jessica Jones, clashing with Cage/Iron Fist, in court in Daredevil...
