Not really. It's all apart of a single continuity. Gravity and TDKR are WB films but they are not in the same Universe or continuity at all.

Huh! I question this because the MCU makes up several franchises Cap, Ironman, Hulk, Thor, and Avengers. Now granted they are connected but they in them selves are separate franchises so to speak.

That is like saying all movies done by a certain movie studio are all part of one franchise. Heck if some DC Troll wants to add up all the WB's DC movies including movies based on graphic novels would that count (personally I say no)?

I see both sides of the coin on this debate, personally I am not even sure why I brought it up actually. Heck it is not like I or any of us get a check in the mail from the earnings of these movies.

It's a shame WB/DC HAVE te potential to do this and they should have been up in atleast the top 3 years ago. Hopefully they can get their Cinematic Universe going already

True - not supporting DC or Marvel. Even if I do enjoy some films more than others I have favourites on both sides. Though I do have to admit Marvel's strategy of combining it into one universe and thus classing it as a franchise will put them on the map for many years as the highest grossing film franchise when it gets to that stage.

That is why I bought both a PS4 and XBOX One, and of course the ugly red headed step child WiiU sitting in the corner. Though my WiiU is like WB/DC due to the fact when they actually release a "Legend of Zelda" (DC movie) game (movie) they are amazing but it takes three to four years to get one.

This is fantastic news and I personally am ecstatic.

Someone asked in another thread why we were celebrating the success of this film when none of us were going to see a penny of the box office. It's a fair question and one I think I can answer.

We're comic book fans. We've seen an amazing comic book film. It's rare that this happens.
The initial reaction to a film like this is excitement, but soon afterwards a realization slowly sinks in, and we are left to ask ourselves WHY we don't see comic films like this more often?

Usually studios are concerned with the numbers. They churn out paint-by-numbers films because they work for the general audience. They don't want to take chances with the 'safe money', and in not doing so they put no real faith in the audience. They are afraid that something may be too dark, or something may be too complex, and in the end we usually have paid for a movie that doesn't challenge us in the slightest, holds our hands throughout, and plays the usual notes that need to be hit in order to be considered decent. "It was okay, I guess."

Remember that movie 'Castaway'? Roger Ebert wrote in his review of the film that studios intentionally give away key information in trailers that in a way seem to sabotage the bigger surprises. In the Castaway trailer we clearly see that the main protagonist returns home from the island. How did director Robert Zemeckis feel about this? His direct quote from David Poland's Web column:

"We know from studying the marketing of movies, people really want to know exactly every thing that they are going to see before they go see the movie. It's just one of those things. To me, being a movie lover and film student and a film scholar and a director, I don't. What I relate it to is McDonald's. The reason McDonald's is a tremendous success is that you don't have any surprises. You know exactly what it is going to taste like. Everybody knows the menu."

As Ebert points out, he respects film but doesn't market films for people who do. He markets for mass consumption. This is what we usually get and for a lot of people it leads to inevitable disappointment. I felt that the first Captain America film tried to be 'Indiana Jones' and came across boring and flat. To me Marvel/Disney shied away from darker material because of their desire to appeal to a broader and more family oriented demographic. Like with their TV show, they sabotage their own tension with humor. Just so you know it's not going to be so bad. Sometimes that humor is a naked scientist running around Stone Henge and your left wondering what the hell you're doing wasting your time watching something ridiculous.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier to me felt like Marvel'Disney finally taking a chance and growing up a bit. Not all comic book movies need to be a gag-fest (it works for some, and although I feel that Cap 2 was better than The Avengers, I feel the Avengers still capture one of the many dynamics of the comic book genre in being a lighthearted action romp), and with this film they let us explore darker material than we're used to from them. It is taking a chance on possibly losing that 'safe-money', and that's something most studios refuse to do (see: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the bloodless nonsensical sappy mess that it is), but when they do it and do it well…you can only pray that the movie does exceptionally at the box office. Well enough to reward the chances taken and the quality we were delivered.

In short, we want films like this to succeed because it encourages the overall all creators to deliver MORE of them. When someone takes a comic book property and turns it into a film, giving it the respect and care we personally do when reading these books it needs to be celebrated and praised. It needs to be patted on the back and given a push forward into the spotlight. It needs to be a shinning example to all the usual mediocre messes we're given as representations of the books we read. It needs to shame those Fantastic Four movies, or Daredevil, or Elektra…etc...

The financial success of this film will see to it that we see another in the near future and therefore I will praise its win at the box office with a megaphone.

While we won't see a dime of that box office in our pockets, we will hopefully see another film like it in the future that will put a smile on our faces and a little more hope in our hearts.

*ahem* Peter Jackson's Middle-earth...I hardly see Tolkien in those movies at all!

Cool news! Good for them. Not to take anything away from it, but it helps to remember the factors going into WHY they're making so much money: the sheer number of movies in the MCU so far, inflation, higher ticket prices, bigger fanbase, etc etc. But yeah, obviously they've been hugely successful, have a smart business plan and have been making high quality movies as well. Those kinds of things help too haha.
