The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, with Zazie Beetz (Joker, Deadpool 2) and Jack Quaid (The Boys, Scream) revealing this year's nominees in all major categories live from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Going in, everyone wondered if Greta Gerwig's Barbie would receive any recognition, and the critically-acclaimed fantasy/comedy did indeed pick up a Best Picture nomination. Ryan Gosling's Kenergy also secured the Blade Runner 2049 star a Best Supporting Actor nom, with America Ferrera landing a Best Supporting Actress nod, but Gerwig and Margot Robbie were not nominated in their respective categories.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer was also nominated for Best Picture, reigniting last year's Barbenheimer battle. Nolan picked up his second Best Director nom, while Cillian Murphy was nominated for Actor in a Leading Role.

Elsewhere, two OG Avengers scored Best Supporting Actor nominations: Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer, and Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things. The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone also picked up a Best Actress nom for her performance in Poor Things, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was nominated for Best Animated Feature (nothing for TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, though).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Godzilla Minus One were nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Have a read through the list of nominations in relevant categories (click here for more) below, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Great year for film. Still need to check out Poor Things, American Fiction, and The Zone of Interest.

@regularmovieguy - Poor Things is excellent, haven't seen the others yet myself but not sure I'm that pushed on watching Nazis sitting in their garden for two hours.

@MarkCassidy

Yeah… not exactly a movie you can hype yourself up to watch but from the pods I listen to it also sounds quite rewarding.

Poor Things and American Fiction I would see in a heartbeat if my schedule wasn’t dragging ass.

@regularmovieguy - Ah no I'm sure it is... Glazer is a great director, it's just not something I felt like rushing out to see.

@regularmovieguy, @MarkCassidy -

The Zone Of Interest is sold and praised solely on its voyeuristic photography. Nothing burger of a movie.

As much as I loved Oppenheimer, I have a soft spot for Past Lives, wouldn't mind seeing it getting the award for best picture.

@MaxPaint - oh ive seen it, and i was enjoying it, until that last line. While it's enjoyable i don't think it belongs in the same category of those other movies. Though ive not seen them all

Barbie was pure and utter trash

@Thing94 - it was pretty creative and had some good gags and funny moments. Probably overrated but I can see the appeal.

Should be an easy Oppenheimer sweep.

marvel72 - 1/23/2024, 10:05 AM
@Ryguy88 - Should be but I won't be able to stop laughing if Barbie gets it.

Only way to watch Barbie is with the sound down and a box of tissues.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 1/23/2024, 10:55 AM
@marvel72 - barbie only got the nod because they extended the field to 10 movies. It's not a legit contender just like when Black Panther was nominated.
Fogs
Fogs - 1/23/2024, 11:18 AM
@Ryguy88 @marvel72 - Agreed, Oppenheimer will take it. Almost seems like they put Barbie there for a cheap laugh.

SauronthePower - 1/23/2024, 11:42 AM
@Fogs - while I agree w you and the OP, I have a sneaking suspicion that ‘Maestro’ and ‘KoaFM’ are going to cause trouble.

NEITHER should be able to unseat ‘Oppenheimer,’ but f-ing ‘Gladiator’ beat ‘Traffic’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’ beat the vastly superior ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ in consecutive years from this sham organization

@Ryguy88 - “Legit contender”.

Critics and audiences loved it.
96% Rotten Tomatoes
- 8.3/10 avg. rating
- 8.6/10 from top critics
88 Metascore

Seemed like a legit contender to me.

@SauronthePower - I was so pissed they saved all the awards for RoTK.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 1/23/2024, 3:20 PM
@LiteralSense - maybe they should just let rotten tomatoes decide these awards then

I’m just expecting a repeat of who won at the Golden Globes. Gosling got nominated, for both acting and that “I’m Ken” song, which means they’re gonna make him perform it at the event… which he’s probably already sick of.
