"They're [Boring] As Sh—t": BLADE RUNNER Director Ridley Scott Gives His Opinion On Superhero Movies

Superhero films are currently dominating Hollywood, and have been for a long time. Multiple movies centered around obscure comic-book characters are seeing the light of day every year, and overall, it seems like audiences can't get enough of them.

Film is subjective, however, and not everyone is a fan of the genre's many offerings (that group includes several Hollywood powerhouses). Throughout the past few years, quite a few individuals in the entertainment industry have expressed their dislike of comic-book movies. Now, a new filmmaker has joined the fray: Alien and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott.

Scott recently sat down for an in-depth interview with Deadline. At one point during the conversation, the Blade Runner director was asked about what he had learned from Stanley Kubrick's unproduced Napoleon biopic. After discussing his approach to adapting real-life stories, Scott stated that the best movies are often propelled by strong characters, and it's then that he opened up about his feelings regarding the superhero genre:

"Almost always, the best films are driven by the characters, and we'll come to superheroes after this if you want, because I'll crush it. I'll f—ing crush it. They're f—ing boring as sh—t."

Scott was then asked what his main issue with superhero films was, to which he replied that their scripts weren't good, comparing them to his own sci-fi and action endeavors:

"Their scripts are not any f—ing good. I think I've done three great scripted superhero movies. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver. One would be f—ing Gladiator, and one would be [Blade Runner]. They're superhero movies. So, why don't the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry. I got off the rail, but I mean, c'mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that's becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you've got the money."

Superhero movies not resonating with everyone is to be expected, so Scott is obvioulsy entitled to his take - though we'd be very curious to learn how many superhero movies he's actually seen to be able to form such a strong opinion!

Scott's next project, House of Gucci, will be released on November 24, 2021.

I very well may be in for a long wait.

@SauronthePower - I've definitely laid a few bad eggs over the years, but I appreciate the sentiment.

I love you Ridley, it's okay not to like things but that blanket statement about these films is going to age badly.
In the end he's an older gentleman not getting films the youth enjoys, it has been the same with Humphrey Bogart, Alec Guiness and multiple great personalities of the past not understanding hits like Star Wars, Alien and The Thing.

Dare I say the worst MCU movie is still miles less boring than Covenant, White Squall, Exodus and Prometheus though…

Let's also not speak about his butchering of Hannibal.

@Blergh - okay... He's made a couple bad movies. That doesn't change his point though. Super hero movies lack good stories and only survive because of cgi fights.

@kazuma - No. These are stories that of people using their skills and tech to save others's lives, and they are inspiring to many. And I'm sure there are other reasons why the survive (not just because of cti fights). I personally never heard of anyone going to these films because of "cti fights". And, when discussing these films with others after they have seen them, NONE of them ever mentioned the "cgi fights".

There is soooooo much more to these films that "cgi fights".

@kazuma - Excellent counter-argument! I have nothing left to say on the subject. Thanks for clearing that up. You must have been excellent in your school's debate teams. If not, you should have tried.

@kazuma - Thats the problem. Making blanket statements. He's not singling out Marvel, Or DC, or anything else. He's just talking about superhero movies as a genre.

I'll be the first to admit that some of the more recent MCU films have been CGI fests without strong stories. But there are a lot of very quality superhero movies.

And what is he even talking about? Where's the story in his original Alien movie? It's literally about an Alien running around on a ship and killing people. I LOVE Alien and Aliens, but since he wants to compare all superhero movies to some of his movies, where is the amazing story in Alien he's talking about? It's pretty simple and straight forward if you ask me. What makes that story so special?

I'm at a point where i don't even get triggered by this shit (actually...never have been) and can totally enjoy Ridley's work as a director without being assblasted cause this old man doesn't like my kinda movies.

Since i know what's coming, i just don't get what we CBM fans get outta this.
I mean...the site gets clicks, but we just get angry.

Martin Scorsese, Denis V and now Ridley Scott...
All that needed to be said has been said on our part, we can't get through the same shit over and over again.

ENOUGH!!!!!
