Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's domestic box-office dominance is likely coming to an end. Maze Runner: The Death Cure is set to take first place from the surprising action-comedy at the North American box office this weekend, ending Jumanji's three-week run in the top spot.

The Jake Kasdan-directed film had an unconventional path to becoming a hit, finishing second to Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the first three weeks of its theatrical run. However, Jumanji managed to take first place in its fourth week and has held that spot ever since. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned over $325 million so far on a $90 million budget.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure earned an estimated $8.4 million on Friday, and is on pace for an opening weekend in the $22-24 million range. The first two films in the series earned over $30 million in their opening weekends, but with a three-year gap between the second and third films, a bit of a drop-off was expected.

The Death Cure's release was delayed due to injuries star Dylan O'Brien sustained during filming two years ago.

@NinnesMBC - Cool, glad to hear. I enjoyed the first two films, interested in seeing how it all plays out. The only of the 'young adult' franchises I've been interested in.

@ChangAlang - Well that is kind of flattering, thank you. :) It was easily for me at least the best entry in the trilogy. Thought the 1st one was okay and the 2nd very but very so-so but this one doesn't waste time with exposition, it dives right into the plot and it is also quite action packed and intense in some parts.

Quite hard to get distracted or bored. And yeah I thought near the end they succeeded in hitting the right emotional tones, I admit I got a slight lump in my throat during the final moments. They did good a job with this one to wrap it up well.

@HeavyMetal4Life - No problem. This franchise was definitely a tad more serious than previous one, maybe at times a bit too serious because there really isn't any significant humor or a comedic relief moment that stands out. The characters are on a mission and they want you do be fully into it with them. There are some very rare funny parts but I don't think they had to sacrifice anything in the process to not deliver what they had to in this one.

It's a nice ending as well within the context of the story. It gave me a slight lump in my throat and that hardly happens to me, so good job right there.

@NinnesMBC - Hey no problem! I liked the books and my daughter likes the movies so it’s a win-win🙂

I’ve found the adaptions to be very well done with only certain character portrayals being changed but that’s by-the-by I guess. I’m also glad Dylan was able to carry on after his accident too.

@NinnesMBC - Wow thats good to hear! That's how I felt about the 1st 2 films as well, but now you got me interested in seeing this one...plus I like to complete what I start, even if it's torture lol.

I wonder how different it’ll be to the book? And yes I understand the necessities for film adaption.

Was the second any good? The first seemed a bit paint by numbers to me.

@Antithesis - the second was really disappointing. the first one was really interesting because of the maze and how they built a solid metaphor around it. without it, the second one is pretty much just a mundane zombie flick.

Harry Potter had Twilight and Percy Jackson.
The Hunger Games has Divergent and Maze Runner.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I'd watch the Maze Runner films over Hunger Games without even thinking twice
