It looks like the planned Dune reboot has found a heck of a director. Following an initial report from last month, Brian Herbert (son of author Frank Herbert) has officially confirmed that Denis Villeneuve has signed in to bring his father's sweeping sci-fi epic to the big screen for Legendary Pictures.


Villeneuve's name was recently brought up as a potential replacement for Ben Affleck on The Batman, and although there is always a slim chance he could tackle that project once he's wrapped on Dune, one would assume this takes him out of the picture - if he was ever really in it in the first place, that is.

There have been several different adaptions of Dune over the years, the most famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) is David Lynch's ambitious but flawed 1984 movie starring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Kyle MacLachlan. This latest take will be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Awesome. LOVE this director and it's about time Dune was done justice. It's a classic.

Though I guess this takes Villenueve off the list for The Batman.

@Super12 - Doubt it. John Carter was subject to terrible marketing and had Andrew Stanton at the reigns, who is a famous animation director but hadn't done a big live action blockbuster.

Villenueve is one of the best directors working today and has nailed it with almost all his films.

@Super12 - I actually rather enjoyed John Carter. It may have been a total bomb at the box office but was still a solid and fun movie. Haven't seen it in a while but I don't remember the cgi being terrible.

@Super12 - I am hopeful that the involvement of Frank Herbert's kids and a slightly more enlightened studio will come up with a movie worthy of the source material and not leaving out the important plot points.

Hopeful as this is on of my favorites. I even use the Litany against fear in my training classes.

@CaptDeadpool - a reasonably fun movie if you never read the books. Disappointing for me because I am a big fan of the books and the character they made that movie about had very little to do with John Carter, man of honor and a fighting man from Virginia. In the movie he was a greedy prick motivated by money and not by honor.
