Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly signed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve to adapt Pulitzer Prize nominee Annie Jacobsen's nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario

Deadline's article has official confirmation that WB Discovery wants Villeneuve to finish his Dune trilogy before taking on Nuclear War, and that Dune: Messiah is now in active development.

In Dune: Messiah, Paul Atreides is now the Emperor and the Fremen army are engaged  a holy war that has destroyed billions of lives throughout the galaxy. Meanwhile, the Three Great Houses, the Tleilaxu, the Spacing Guild, and the Bene Gesserit, scheme to remove Paul because they are afraid of his clairvoyant powers.

Simultaneously, Paul, makes use of his abilities to navigate an ever-more hazardous future in order to preserve both his own and his empire's futures.

While we await official box office numbers for this weekend to arrive later today, it should be noted that Dune: Part Two sat at $626M globally, as of the previous weekend and is, to date, currently the highest-grossing film of 2024.

Box office analysts now expect the film to eclipse the $700M global mark before finishing its run in theaters.

Per The Hollywood ReporterDune: Part Two's break-even target for box office revenue was $500M.

Villeneuve has coyly stated in the past that he won't make a third film if it doesn't surpass the second but given the film's box office performance and hype, a third film always seemed inevitable.

Dune: Part Two features an exceptional cast with Timothée Chalamet starring as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

Also appearing in supporting roles are Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring, Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam and Javier Bardem as Stilgar.

Dune: Part Two was released on March 01, 2024. The film was originally set for release on November 3, 2023, but was pushed back due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Hollywood strike.

Dune: Part Two Official Synopsis
Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Denis Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Herbert’s novel.

@GhostDog - they must be kicking themselves for having that falling out with Nolan which made him go to Universal with Oppenheimer.

This was expected but the confirmation is nice to hear. This is going to be the toughest one to adapt well, but I have faith that they can do it!

@mountainman - Yup. Books get a little wonky at this point.

@TheNewYorker - They get really weird starting at Children of Dune. Messiah isn’t weird as much as it is cerebral. I imagine they will have to make some changes from the book to make it a good adaptation.

LOL! That didn't take long.

Villeneuve: I've been at this a long time and may want to explore other avenues. I won't make a third film if it doesn't surpass the second.

WB exec: Here is a giant semi tractor-trailer filled with 100 million gazillion dollars.

Villeneuve: I'm in.

Cool , not surprising given the success of Part 2 but good to have it be official nonetheless!!.

I still need to see it , just haven’t been able to due to various factors such as Ramadan but hope to next weekend (possibly a double feature with Monkey Man?).

Anyway , Villenueve’s new project sounds interesting even if it is blatantly WV trying to cash in on their own Oppenheimer…

Wonder how he’ll adapt it though since it’s mainly made up of interviews with military personnel & officials and also is the secret project he’s been referring to or is that something else?.

Dude has a lot of adaptations he’s working on so good luck!!.

I wonder how they will do the time skip or Chani differences.
I believe Messiah takes place 12 years after, Chani has to make up with Paul, and the book doesnt have a lot that would appeal to wide audience like epic battles.

@EnergyVamp - I think this is where DV can take some liberties and dedicate the first 45 minutes to an hour of the film to the epic holy war that is basically skipped over in the book.

Hell yeah. Excited to see how they chose to adapt this one. It’s more tricky. I’m guessing they will show more of the holy war and the federation stealing the worms.

@MrDandy - that would be the smart route let's hope you are correct.

If you skip the holy war or do one of DVs famous thirty second glorified music video quick cut action montages before skipping 12 years it's gonna feel quite deflating narratively. You have to consider as much when adapting from one medium to another. Peter Jackson understands this better than anyone IMO.
