Earlier this year, Dune: Part 2 director Denis Villeneuve confirmed that, if given the opportunity, he would return to helm a third movie based on Frank Herbert's second novel in the sprawling saga, Dune: Messiah.

The Messiah adaptation coming to fruition would likely depend on how successful Part 2 proves to be at the box office (the first film did very well, but nothing is ever guaranteed), but the filmmaker hasn't been sitting around waiting to see how things play out.

While speaking to South Korean press over the weekend, Villeneuve said that Dune Messiah "is being written right now. The screenplay is almost finished, but it is not finished. It will take a little time. There’s a dream of making a third movie... it would make absolute sense to me.”

Even if a third film is given the greenlight, it sounds like it's going to be a while before Villeneuve begins shooting it.

“I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis,” he added. “I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity I might do something in between, but my dream would be to go a last time on this planet that I love.”

As for Part 2, Villeneuve believes it turned out better than the first movie.

"For me, this film is much better than Part One. There’s something more alive in it. There’s a relationship to the characters. I was trying to reach for an intensity and a quality of emotions that I didn’t reach with Part One and that I did reach with Part Two. I’m not saying the film is perfect, but I’m much more happy with Part Two than I was with Part One. I can not wait to share it with the fans and the moviegoers.”

The run-time for the sci-fi sequel has also been revealed, and it'll be longer than the first movie by about 11 minutes.

The saga continues as award-winning filmmaker Denis Villeneuve embarks on Dune: Part Two, the next chapter of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel Dune, with an expanded all-star international ensemble cast. The film, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021’s six-time Academy Award-winning Dune.

The big-screen epic continues the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s acclaimed bestseller Dune with returning and new stars, including Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Wonka, Call Me by Your Name), Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Malcolm & Marie, Euphoria), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame, Milk), Oscar nominee Austin Butler (Elvis, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood), Oscar nominee Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Little Women), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Love and Thunder), Oscar winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter,), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Léa Seydoux (James Bond, Crimes of the Future), with Stellan Skarsgård (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Assassin’s Creed), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos).

Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Hot take - Dune Messiah is a better book than Dune. I like the moral issues that come with exploring the ruler after they are ruling versus the more traditional savior storyline.

That being said, Messiah is a more cerebral storyline with less action so it could be more difficult to adapt well. They’ll almost have to add in some stuff, like flashbacks to the jihad.

@tmp3 - I'd bet on Deadpool 3 over this tbh. Not saying that this won't make a lot, but I wouldn't underestimate the Deadpool and Wolverine combination.

@FireandBlood - It'll need to really step up its game to be movie of the year if we were to base on the first one.

@Urubrodi - The second half of the book is far better than the first half. Dune adapted that first half, and the movie was mostly setup of the characters, world, and conflict. The next movie should be where the major conflict and events happen.

@mountainman - I hope so, cause the first one was basically exposition the movie. Not sure why some people praise it so much. It's by no means a bad movie, but didn't find it that special. Looking forward to the sequel though.

@FireandBlood - Sure... because Dune is such a deep movie... Blade Runner 2 by the same director is way better than the first Dune. Don't get me wrong I'm looking forward to the sequel, but I do think the first part is incredibly overrated.

@Urubrodi - Yeah I liked the look and tone of the first, plus it was nice to have a new scifi IP that took itself seriously.

But I get that not a whole lot happens, action wise, besides the coup against the Atreides compound. Even the meeting between Paul and the Fremen was a bit subdued.

If the second part can land, I picture the two movies working really well together as a two parter.

Typically if you look at other books split in two, the first part is typically set up and doesn’t stand that well on its own.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/12/2023, 9:54 AM
@Urubrodi - It’s a movie that doesn’t get made anymore, not on that scale. A wholly sincere film full of visual awe that never undercuts the drama, entirely faithful to its source in theme and tone. A passion project from a director that has been working on these storyboards since he was 8 years old turned into a cinematic epic that lived up to what many believed couldn’t be done, let alone done well.

You don’t get it, and that’s fine, but it really is just that. You just don’t get it. Some thing’s aren’t for everyone, but Dune receives the praise it does for same reason to Blade Runner 2049 does; it’s an impossible movie made real.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 12/12/2023, 10:00 AM
@FireandBlood - I agree that it's a type of movie that we don't see very often anymore, same with Blade Runner 2, that does not mean however that is a movie free of flaws. It's far from perfect. And I do enjoy this type of movies, hence why I'm looking forward to a sequel, I just don't think this one is that good, but if you like like it that much that's fine.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 12/12/2023, 10:47 AM
@Urubrodi - You can find flaws in any movie, but perfect never meant flawless, a common misconception that’s all too often perpetuated.

Dune has all the desired elements a Dune movie should have, and it hits all the right notes, which is why it receives the praise it does. Obviously that’s lost on you, which is why you don’t rate it so highly but it probably comes down to you not really liking Dune as a work a fiction as much as everybody else. Like I said, some things just aren’t for everyone.

@TheCoonII - Deadpool 3 will make more money but it won't be the same caliber or class that Dune Part II will be. There is a difference between making bank and being the best film of the year

@MotherGooseUPus - i agree that dune and Deadpool are not in the same category of film and should not be compared to one another i was one countering the claim that dune will outgross every cbm chances of others are fluid but for it to outgross Deadpool reynolds would have to [frick] it up beyond repair

@MrDandy - agreed. I have a feeling Dune Part II will be better just based on Denis' comments about the film and making it. I can't wait and hope he gets his trilogy, which would gone down as one the best ever

It's good they found the right director for this because he seems very passionate about it. It's cool when creatives can are actually allowed to work freely to complete their creative visions.

I'm hoping to get the book for Christmas to be informed and then watch Part 1 before seeing Part 2 on March. The book is supposed to be 896 pages I think so I could read it all in two months with luck and it'll be a good challenge.
