Deadline is reporting that Legendary has acquired the film and TV rights to Frank Herbert's Dune, which of course means there's a very good chance the studio is planning a new adaptation of the sci-fi classic at some point in the future. There's no mention of what those plans might entail, just that "any project will be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers."

There have been several different adaptions of Dune, the most famous (or infamous depending on your perspective) is David Lynch's ambitious but flawed 1984 movie starring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Kyle MacLachlan.

We'll update once we know more, but for now be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

Uneccessary film reboot...

Unless they make it a show. I'd rather see Dune as a serial cable saga, than as a movie again.

@ComicsBornAndBred - There's like 15 hours of SyFy channel movies and a couple of them have James McAvoy, but they are dull as shit.

I LOVED Dune, (a family fav growing up). It would be dope to see it done again, IF the acting is on par. Spice is Life

It should be a high-budget premium cable series a la Game of Thrones, but the universe isn't a just and righteous place, so it will probably get turned into another round of shit like Lynch's film. Such a shame that so many people think of it when they think of Dune.

If Legendary wants to make more money than they could ever even imagine...they should work with Disney and do the MOTHER OF ALL CROSSOVERS...Star Wars and Dune...Jedi versus Bene Gesserit...the First Order versus the Imperium...Skywalkers offspring versus House Atriedes. The only real change that would have to be made is to set Dune in the past and from another galaxy instead of from earth's future.

@Forthas - I always envisioned it happening during The Purge.

Vader boards a Jedi vessel and during the battle, the navi-computer is damaged while in lightspeed. An explosion knocks the survivors unconscious. Upon waking, the Jedi take the ship out of lightspeed to find they are stranded in a far flung corner of the Galaxy not on any of their star charts. Still fleeing Vader, the Jedi crash land an escape pod on Arrakis. Discovered and taken in by the Fremen, they discover that Crysknives are a match for lightsabers.

Vader allies himself with Ix or the Tleilax and shit gets juicy. Eventually, Vader does hunt down and destroy the refugee Jedi and when betrayed by his partners, retreats in the repaired Jedi Ship to a Galaxy far, far away.

Bob's your uncle, rake in the cash.

@Dunejedi - The way I imagine it is that Luke seeks the first Jedi temple. He comes to discover that it was derived from a rival religion to the Bene Gesserit. Meanwhile the First order builds another star base that is indestructable. The next generation Skywalker discovers that combined with the Force they can fold space around a planet. Thus when the use the star base on Dune it folds space and star base destroys itself.
