Highlander Franchise to Be Rebooted

Highlander Franchise to Be Rebooted

A sixth Highlander film lurks in the shadows. Will it raise the Highlander franchise back to its former glory, or dash the hopes of countless fans to such a depth that even an immortal can not survive?

Highlander: The Reckoning is the sixth installment in the franchise, but by all reports will be a reboot that serves as a retelling of the original 1986 film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery as Conner McCloud and Juan Ramirez, respectively. It will follow the story of an Immortal from the highlands of Scotland, once trained by ancient Immortal Ramirez, fighting in modern times against other immortals in a "contest" called the Gathering; a contest whose ultimate end line is that there can be only one.

However, since the rumors are that this is an attempt to restart the franchise one could guess that this will be only one "Gathering" out of several, meaning that this film will not end in the prize being attained. Fans of Highlander will likely be willing to give the franchise another try, but stay tuned for further updates

Fast and Furious director Justin Lin is set to direct. Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are set to write the re-telling. Producing is Neal Moritz.

Rumor to play the Kurgan is Vinnie Jones

Who should play Connor McCloud? Gerald Butler? And What of Ramirez? Chime in below and tell us who you think should take on the mantle of Highlander for this next generation.

What amazes me is that Highlander: The Series, starting with season two, was great television with writers who successfully explored Duncan as a character and the Highlander mythology as a whole. Why the two feature films that followed the series were so abyssmal is beyond me. Why are they SO unable to capture the essence of the premise? Let's hope this reboot gets everything back on track. At this stage, though, my hopes aren't high.

Yeah Its going to be a very strange reboot

It contains Guns, Snipers and Highlanders that will only use swords to take heads.

Not a very good idea for a reboot but oh well!

First movie was good, a classic. The sequels were a complete waste of time and kept getting worse in every sense (story, acting, effects). I will prob check this out since i'm a fan of the first movie (and its epic Queen soundtrack), but like Ed, my hopes aren't high. The choice of Director doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

@Tazmaniak, I agree, Liam Neeson for Ramirez, but you may have to change his name to something else, because he clearly isn't Spanish.

Liam Neeson has awesome sword skills too. Liam Neeson would be EPIC!

Every film after the first Highlander was a reboot.

This franchise has no where else to go, it's been bled dry.

The first one was a classic, but it wasn't a perfect movie and it certainly had it's 80's cheese about it. Another reboot of the series would be great. The television show was great in my opinion and it was a whole reboot of the first movie, which had a sequel that was also a reboot.

@Timerider84: Why change the name from Ramirez? It's a fake name to begin with. The character isn't Spanish, he is Egyptian.

SoulAllFlush is dead right about every "sequel" actually being kind of a reboot in itself. As for this new reinvention - is it really necessary?

Javier Bardem - Ramirez (I think he can pull off Egyptian)
Gerard Butler - Conner MacLeod (C'mon get a real Scott)
Mads Mikkelsen - The Kurgen (although only at 6ft, I think they would need raise/bulk him up a bit.)

I am nonplussed about the idea of remaking this movie.
The original ROCKED. The rest stank in comparison.

Besides, without the chance of a new soundtrack by Queen, why even bother?

A while back there were rumors of Kevin Mckidd playing the role of Conner MacLeod. IMO he'd be a great choice....good actor, experience with a sword, and a true Scott.

A lot of those actors are very old.Conner was young when he became immortal.Because the character needs to appear to not age over the course of the film series, it wouldn't make much sense to cast an older actor.

Lambert was 29 and Paul was 33.

James Purefoy is great, but he's not much younger than Lambert, who originally played the character 24 years ago.I think he's about 47.

Ewan Mcgregor, Thomas Jane and Gerard Butler are also great, but they're 40+ and they look it.When dealing with immortal characters, seems like 30 is a good age to cast.

What about James McAvoy, or Billy Boyd, Dougray Scott, Dominic Monoghan. A whole lot of good Scottish actors left out. I think James McAvoy and Dougray Scott are probably the best for the roles. I think they would have great chemistry as Macleod and Ramirez.

Colin Farrell, James Purefoy or Gerard Butler as Connor MacLeod
Michael Fassbender (Have you seen him in 300. Guy is [frick]ing awesome) or Mads Mikkelsen (Have you seen him in Valhalla Rising. Guy is [frick]ing bad ass) as The Kurgan
Jeff Bridges or Liam Neeson as Ramirez
