Mechagodzilla quickly became one of Godzilla vs. Kong's worst kept secrets. It was around eighteen months ago that toy images of the character first leaked online, and while it was only teased in the trailers, director Adam Wingard took to Instagram days before the movie was released to reveal one of the robotic villain's action figures (which he was asked to do by Warner Bros.).
Talking to Inverse, the filmmaker explained why watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon served as a good lesson to him about what not to do when dreaming up a robotic creation like Mechagodzilla.
"I remember watching the third Transformers movie in the theater. It was one of those things where I was with a date, and we got there late, and the only seats that were available were literally in the front row. And so I'm sitting there watching Transformers 3 in the front row, and I couldn't tell what the hell was going on," Wingard recalls. "The Transformers, they just looked like metal. They looked like a plane crash. So I thought, that's the thing I wanted to avoid. They were too complex. There are too many moving parts, and I couldn't latch on to anything. Nothing felt iconic with that Transformers design."
Talking of that more simplistic design for Mechagodzilla, we have an awesome piece of concept art by Jared Krichevsky which highlights the work that went into bringing the metalic Kaiju to the big screen.
While having Godzilla and Kong team up to fight this larger threat was a tad predictable, it worked well within the context of the movie, and that design lent itself to what proved to be an exciting final battle. Will Mecha-King Ghidorah follow? We'll have to wait and see what comes next for the MonsterVerse, but that has to be among the possibilities.
