The underperformance of Godzilla: King of The Monsters led to speculation that Godzilla Vs. Kong might end up being the final chapter in Legendary's MonsterVerse, but the recently released clash of the Titans exceeding expectations at the box office (it passed $400 globally million over the weekend) clearly paved the way for more adventures of the giant monster variety.
THR reports that Legendary is planning "one or more installments" for the MonsterVerse, and director Adam Wingard is in talks to helm the next movie. What will the GVK follow-up focus on? Well, according to the trade, "one possible title being floated internally" is Son of Kong.
The title may not be set in stone, but it sounds like the current plan is to introduce the King of Skull Island's bouncing baby boy.
The original Son of Kong was released by RKO Pictures back in 1933 as a direct sequel to King Kong, and although it's not considered to be even close to the classic its predecessor is, the movie does have its share of fans. Of course, this new take is unlikely to follow the same story and will almost certainly be a complete reimagining.
Wingard has the Thundercats animated movie for Warner Bros. on his to-do list as well as a Face/Off sequel for Paramount, so it'll probably be a while before he's free to return to the MonsterVerse. As of right now, no writer is attached.
