GODZILLA VS. KONG Director On Whether Negative KING OF THE MONSTERS Reaction Changed His Approach

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a critical and commercial disappointment, and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has opened up on whether that led to any sort of course-correction with his sequel.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in 2019, and grossed a tepid $386.6 million at the worldwide box office. The reviews were also negative, and its performance both commercially and critically paled in comparison to both Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla vs. Kong was already in development when King of the Monsters arrived in theaters, so did director Adam Wingard feel the need to make up for some of Michael Dougherty's mistakes?

"Well, I mean, one of the reasons why [Warner Bros.] brought me on for a follow up to King of Monsters is because I am so different than Michael Dougherty as a director," the filmmaker told Collider. "I mean he definitely leans more into the kind of horror realm, and his approach to Godzilla is really kind of scary in a lot of ways, and I think that they knew that the next film after that had to be different regardless of how it was going to be received, and I think I was kind of chosen ultimately because my take was always going to be [tonally very fun and] colorful and all those kinds of things, and so fortunately it didn't really affect us too much in a literal way."

Wingard added that he was aware of, "some of the stuff where, you know, people felt like [King of the Monsters] was like too dark in places, or there was too many particle effects and stuff. [But] ultimately that didn't totally factor in because my version was always kind of what you see right now."

It seems Godzilla vs. Kong was always going to be its own thing, and that's probably for the best.

Wingard is definitely an interesting choice to take the helm of a blockbuster like this, and if that first trailer is any indication, it's going to be a crazy ride.

The cast includes Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry, and arrives on HBO Max (and in theaters) next month.

very diplomatic answer! 👍🏾 King of Monsters was just fine though. at least we got to see more action compared to all the slow and veiled reveals in Godzilla

The first Godzilla is still the best for its tone.

The military approach was a hundred times more interesting than the boring scientist in KoTM.

@DARKSEIDDIS - I liked King of Monsters more. Godzilla 2014 was too boring and slow. I prefer the science over generic military lead becuz it felt like a generic michael bay or resident evil movie. making the lead military related always felt too propaganda, even the new monster hunter movie is military related.

Was so excited for King of Monsters and then wound up hating it, lol

@tmp3 - Same here

The trailer was amazing, but the human characters butchered that movie so thoroughly

@lordSTALE - I saw the trailers like 40 times. So well cut together, it was like my most anticipated big budget film that whole summer. What a colossal disappointment lol

@tmp3 - I'm total opposite lol. Godzilla 2014 had a cool trailer of the soldiers falling from the sky, then the movie was just so boring with just random teases of Godzilla. ATJ was just a generic military character from a michael bay movie.

In KoM, the scientists give you more knowledge behind the lead Kaijus which made it feel more mythic.

These movies have a hard time getting the human elements to work. I would say that’s more of the writer’s problem though. The director is responsible for the dark fights in the rain. I still can’t believe they did such a great job with Kong Skull Island. The human elements were done well, and the island monsters were showcased in all their glory, especially the King!

@Saintsinnister - I think thats always been the problem. Besides Gojira 1954 and Shin Godzilla, the human characters have never worked. They somehow turn Godzilla into Jurassic Park , so the human characters are not interesting (this includes the original Japanese films too). Godzilla has always been a metaphor for nuclear weapon or militarized weapons so if the film isn't political its hard to get a good plot.

Kong was good but Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson were as generic as ATJ in Godzilla 2014. The most interesting characters where John C Riley and Sam Jackson because they had motives but they weren't the leads and when they weren't in front of the camera it was a bit boring. Love Kong Skull Island alot though

Shin Godzilla is the only movie that matters imo, all those recent monster movies have been lackluster. Too many tropes that we've seen a hundreds time before, while Shin really did a great job at being as realistic as this type of film can be while still being engaging from the filmmaking (camera, cinematography, sounds were great). The tranformations were terrifying as hell, in comparison to the 2014 film where I fell asleep in the theater.

@Cooler - imo = I’m moving out ,

@Cooler - With you on this. Shin Godzilla is the only one that really worked for me. Genuinely scary compared to the US movies.

The 2014 Godzilla is actually one of maybe 3-4 movies ever during which I fell asleep in the theater.

@Cooler - shin is better than the 2014 and skull island but not as good as king of the monsters even according to toho. They were so pleased with kotm that they cancelled shin godzilla 2 and are doubling down on the monsterverse

Aren’t all Wingard's movies horror, while Dougherty's filmography is made of both action movies and horror comedies, so where is he pulling this "Dougherty's sensibilities are scarier than mine" thing from? Eh, whatever, I will check this out, but I'm not all that excited, since Wingard's track record with established properties is terrible (remember 2016's Blair Witch and Netflix's Death Note?) and so far Skull Island is the only Monsterverse movie I have liked.

@FinnishDude - The Guest was an action film, so they probably hired him off the back of that instead of Death Note or anything
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 2/23/2021, 4:51 AM
@tmp3 - I would call it more of a thriller than an outright action movie and IIRC both Wingard and the writer cited 80's horror movies as an inspiration for it.

Biggest gripe like many with 2014 Godzilla was it was lit too damn dark, there’s some really good stuff in there otherwise and I think it’s the best out the monsterverse, I know some people find it boring which I can’t argue with because I’ll admit there’s a lot of military stuff going on making it feel like somethings happening yet some how still feels like nothing is happening 😂

Wasn't a fan of king of the monsters but love Dougherty’s passion, Skull Island was alright.

Was anyone's problem with King of the Monsters that it was "too scary"? My problem was it was boring as [frick] and dumb.

Each of the the Monsterverse films had their own tones and this looks like a mix of all three previous films. It certainly look better than KOTM which was disappointing to me and the human element seems more monster focused and interesting compared to the previous films but now it's all about the execution and I'm gonna be cautiously optimistic about that.

All previous movies were fine for me (Godzilla still being my favorite). Sounds like this will be a fun one too

These are always hit or miss for me. Godzilla 2014 took me 7 tries before I wouldn't fall asleep during it. I absolutely loved Kong: Skull Island. And I feel Godzilla KothM kinda over-delivered on its monster fights to the point where it reminded me of the third act of BvS.

I’ll never understand the hate for King Of The Monsters. I wanted to see Godzilla fighting other monsters and I got what I wanted.I watch these movies for the giant monsters. I’ve never once watched a Godzilla movie for the human characters and their ... (gulp) ... character development.
