Godzilla and King Kong are set to face-off in one week's time, as the appropriately titled Godzilla vs. Kong stomps its way into theatres and onto HBO Max on March 31.

Fans have long debated which of the modern day incarnations of these legendary monsters would come out on top if they were to engage in fisticuffs (Big G won in 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla), and director Adam Wingard has now revealed that Godzilla is the stronger of the two.

"Some of the criticism leveled at monster movies is that it’s always just monsters smacking each other and rolling around. I wanted the action scenes to be more memorable," said the filmmaker when asked how he approached the fight sequences. "For our first major action scene, which is an ocean battle, we have Kong at a severe disadvantage. He can’t really swim that well. He can’t hold his breath. Godzilla swims really well. He’s on his turf and he already has an advantage because he’s a stronger monster."

While 'Zilla may be better equipped for this massive clash of the Titans, it sounds like audiences are going to be more sympathetic towards the King of Skull Island.

"You can’t help but identify with Kong more," Wingard adds. "He’s more like us. I’ve always been a bigger Godzilla fan, but I found myself falling in love with Kong in a way that I wasn’t expecting to. I really worried about him. There are certain things in the scripts that came about and were supposed to happen to him and I nixed them. I felt too bad for him."

Though we have been assured that "one will fall," speculation points to the iconic creatures teaming up to take on the bigger threat of Mechagodzilla.

They didn't really do a good job of showing that in the trailers.

Godzilla may be stronger, but Kong has opposable thumbs and is the fastest gun in the west

I'm looking forward to seeing it play out. I've spoiled myself of the plot, and with the visuals from the trailers, well I'll be watching it day one.

Not really a fan of Kong or GZ. TBH, I'm not even that hyped for this. My level of interest is like a lot of people's in NASCAR, they just want to see some big ass collisions where everybody gets fcuked up, maybe an unnecessary death or 2.
