Godzilla vs. Kong arrived in theaters on Wednesday, the same time it became available to stream on HBO Max. Despite there being an option to watch the movie from the comfort  - and safety - of home, the crossover event has vastly exceeded expectations with a $27.9 million haul at the domestic box office as of yesterday.

That comes after an $11.6 million Friday at 3,064 locations, and the 5-day projection for the movie currently sits at $42 million according to Deadline. That's the best 3 and 5-day box office haul since mid-March when closures began thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The crazy thing about this is that it's not too far behind Godzilla: King of the Monster's opening weekend ($47.8 million) in 2019. At the time, it was believed MonsterVerse fatigue was setting in, something which seemingly didn't bode well for Godzilla vs. Kong. However, with fans desperate to see these two iconic Titans share the screen, and moviegoers anxious for a blockbuster, it's exceeded all expectations.

Talking to Collider, writer Max Borenstein addressed the possibility of Godzilla vs. Kong spawning sequels and spinoffs.

"Hopefully there will be, I have no idea," he admitted. "If not the peak then the plateau that everyone has been aiming for. This is a point that has been a part of the ambition since the beginning, so I look forward to whatever the next iteration of this franchise is. This has certainly been getting these two characters, like The Avengers, you build to that place. That's not to say there aren't future movies that bring everyone together."

It remains to be seen whether an even bigger crossover is now planned, or if Warner Bros. and Legendary will reboot Godzilla and King Kong for future stories. Numbers like these are bound to have an impact on how studios release their movies over the next few years, regardless.

Yeah, when I was watching this movie, I was just like, "How tf could anyone dislike this?"

I mean, if monster movies just isn't your thing, that's cool. But if you just come into it with a clear mind with the expectation of cool monster fights and nothing else... Then it does that.

Also, this movie had some of the best CGI I have ever seen.

@KWilly - the detail on Kong especially was really good in my opinion

@bkmeijer - Yeah, you could see his facial expressions. Couldn't see that on the big, fat lizard lol

Based on a filmmaking level I think Godzilla’s the best, but based on entertainment and spectacle it’s easily Kong vs Godzilla. I just had so much fun. Would happily see more in the Hollow Earth, just remove Millie entirely though

@Cap1 - I'm still a bit confused on Hollow Earth (like is it at the centre of the Earth, and if so did Godzilla really blast a 6000 km long tunnel?), but I wouldn't mind seeing more of it either.

Also, if that wasn't Gamera that ate the crab in Hollow Earth, I think we've seen another one of Godzilla's species

@bkmeijer - yeah i’m pretty unsure on it too, that’s mainly why I want more. I don’t think they delve into it much cos there’s a lot to cover, it’s easy another route for a movie. I honestly don’t remember that part, I think I need to rewatch it

@bkmeijer - I read an article yesterday that there was more of the film that would've explained things a bit more but it was cut. Had something to do with a drill which created the hole in Antarctic and with Skarsard's brother dying, Dr scerwiza's son having more background, and supposedly more description of hollow Earth and would've had more cameos of monsters.

@Cap1 - it was a very blink and you miss it moment, so it's probably nothing more than a fun nod than anything else

@TheFireForce - the only thing they could've expanded on a little more are indeed Serizawa, but also some Monarch stuff.

It deed feel like some stuff was cut, but I don't necessarily want an extended cut. Windgard himself set this was his version already anyways.
