GODZILLA VS. KONG Star Eiza González Addresses Some Of The Sweeping Changes Made To The Movie

Godzilla vs. Kong didn't just cut scenes, but entire characters! Now, star Eiza González has revealed some of the changes that were made to the movie in post, including scrapping Jessica Henwick's role...

Godzilla vs. Kong opened to mixed reviews last year, but even in the midst of the pandemic (and a dual release on streaming courtesy of HBO Max), it was still a hit. Kaiju fans are eager for another battle between the Titans, but it was clear that some big changes were made to the crossover event; for starters, Iron Fist alum Jessica Henwick ended up being completely cut from the story!

Ambulance star Eiza González played Apex Cybernetics executive Maia Simmons in Godzilla vs. Kong, and admitted in an interview with THR (via SFFGazette.com) that her role totally changed.

"A lot of the story got cut out and the story was completely changed, so it was a bummer because my character had a whole different storyline that went in different routes," the actress explained. "And Jessica getting cut out of the movie really affected all of the other characters. But it wasn’t anything to do with Jessica’s character. It was just that the storyline changed because the movie is called Godzilla vs. Kong and it obviously has to service them. They’re the big stars."

"I’m just grateful that I got to do a really fun movie. I really enjoyed that shoot. I really enjoyed working with Adam [Wingard] and my cast. I love Legendary and Warners," González continued. "So my experience was really good, but that’s just par for the course, sometimes. You learn so much by doing these movies, and I’m just really happy that we were able to release that movie. I would’ve loved for us to wait a little longer because it was just such a fun, big movie. I would’ve loved for more people to experience it in a big, big theater."

González was actually supposed to have a lead role in the movie, but ended up being little more than a supporting character. Like the recently released Morbius, there's clearly another version of Godzilla vs. Kong hidden away somewhere, but for many fans, cutting a few humans was far from a bad decision.

After all, 2014's Godzilla came under fire for not putting enough of the spotlight on its title monster, and there was definitely plenty of epic Kaiju action when the King of the Monsters battled Kong.

The franchise's future is unclear, though Son of Kong is expected to be next for theaters.

Her character was the generic good person, until not good person who dies in an extreme way so I don't care. Also the runtime was almost perfect, adding all that meaningless story would have made it feel too long

I understand it may suck for her, but as she said, the movie's titled godzilla vs kong, you're gonna get godzilla and kong. The human characters have always been the weakest and less interesting part of these movies, it isn't surprising at all that they'd just stop trying with them altogether.

Why not just give her ALL the screen time.😍

I feel her saying she wishes more people could see it on the big screen. I know from time to time movies are rereleased, but I'm guessing this one didn't make enough bang to warrant that. I'm one of those weirdos who love 3D IMAX movies. I didn't see this one in theaters. I'd love to see it in IMAX 3D. Also, the sound can't be matched. This type of movie was made for a massive screen. The same with Dune. Many didn't see that in theaters.

I mean, it's pretty obviously in response to the criticism of king of the monsters. Same reason they didn't bother explaining the Asian guy was supposed to be Ken Watanabe's son.

This movie was so much dumb fun. I HATED all the ridiculous unexplainable stuff, like how they could bundle a giant robot inside a mountain in the middle of Hong Kong and no one knew. How they could make train tunnels underground that went all the way to Hong Kong and no one know about it. How those helicopters lifted Kong. Kong dumb ass axe (he dont need no axe), I would rather him have his electric powers like the original. Alot of dumb stuff, BUT IT WAS STILLA GOOD FUN MOVIE.

The human story arcs are arbitrary in a movie called Godzilla vs Kong. As long as they punch each other the other storylines are filler until more punching happens.

Pretty obvious that KOTM criticisms caused them to rethink the story just a little bit which I feel turned out to be a smart move on their part although Ì definitely missed Jessica Henwick and Zhang Ziyi. Bottom line is create interesting characters and balance them out with great kaiju action which they haven't exactly nailed yet besides Bryan Cranston and Jia but none of these movies are as good as Shin Godzilla or Peter Jackson's King Kong and Godzilla and Kong deserve better than the same mediocre writers they keep using.

They have the exciting kaiju action down to a science, but they need to figure out their approach to human characters, classic kaiju films show that having copious amounts of human scenes works when done right. Go back to Cranston and Hottle to figure out why does worked so well.

I don't remember her character at all, but I do think they cut out to much. She is right it's a movie about Godzilla and Kong, but it still could've used a bit more human-lead stories. Just scrap the conspiracy arc and throw in more Monarch next time

This film is definitely my least favorite on the MonsterVerse films. Would have actually loved to see Jessica Henwick and Danai in the film. Hot take, but I thought KOTM and Kong: Skull Island we’re the best MonsterVerse films to date
