GODZILLA VS. KONG Tops $358 Million Worldwide As MORTAL KOMBAT Opens With A Solid $11 Million Overseas

Deadline reports that Godzilla vs. Kong is still dominating the global box office after adding another $24.1 million from overseas locations this weekend for a total of $288.3 million internationally. Throw in what the crossover event has earned in the U.S., and it's sitting pretty at $357.8 million worldwide.

This puts it on track to surpass what Tenet made last summer, and likely leaves Warner Bros. feeling good about the decision to have Godzilla vs. Kong hit theaters and HBO Max at the same time.

While that was a controversial move, it's driven a huge number of subscribers to WarnerMedia's streaming service, while also generating a healthy haul from the box office you have to believe will at least cover production and marketing costs. With this in mind, it's no wonder Marvel Studios is planning a similar release for Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+'s Premier Access.

There's more good news for Warner Bros. after the weekend, as Mortal Kombat made just shy of $11 million from 17 offshore markets, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan.

Unfortunately, this early release means there are already spoiler clips all over YouTube and social media!

The second half of 2021 looks set to be much busier for blockbusters than the first, but these numbers do show that there's an appetite there for the big screen experience among moviegoers.

So Godzilla vs Kong really might end up making a profit? Impressive considering the circustances.

Hoping WB takes this as a sign that there is interest in the franchise. Really wanna see Godzilla and Kong mess up some more monsters.

@bkmeijer - It already made profit. The budget is only 160 mil and it grossed 358 mil worldwide, more than 2x its budget. WB also paid Legendary Pictures another 250 mil+ to put it on HBOMax same day as theatrical. So basically Legendary Pictures has already made 500 - 600 mil off this film by leasing it to HBO Max for 30 days and its world wide theatrical run.

It's crazy how a film that can illegally pirated is doing so well in theaters.

@mastakilla39 - Guess that only WB is not making a profit here then

@bkmeijer - HBO Max is though gathering new subscriber's so it's a long game for WB when it comes to making profits.

@bkmeijer - Yeah and even with KvG's success, early reports are saying that WB is not planning anymore sequels because they lost alot of money underestimating it's theatrical run. KvG is the final film of the monster-verse.

I'm kinda sad because I like this new iteration of kaijus. Steven D Knight (Daredevil season 2 director) said there were plans to connect both Pacific Rim and the Monsterverse, but once Pacific Rim 2 flopped they canned it.

GvK being this much of a success sure is a surprise, a welcome one at that. This franchise deserves to thrive.

Man I hope MK is a hit as well, I really really really want this to turn into a multi-movie saga leading to the time travel aspect of the games

Glad that the Monsterverse is being successful it has so much potential despite some of the glaring problems in each film although from what I've heard the next films will feel more focused now since they were still trying to figure things out with this universe. Hyped for Mortal Kombat hopefully it will exceed my expectations like GvK did.

Mortal Kombat will probably make around 200 milion worldwide (could do more if it opens big in china) but this is an okay start, I think this will perform better on HBO MAX.
Glad to see GvK making money, will probably hit 400 milion once this week is over. This has yet to open in some countries including Japan so it will make some more money, curious to see if it gets to 500 milion when all is said and done.

Gvk was great but mk was just plain bad. A few cool fights don't save mk as even with the action it's barely watchable. They should soft reboot mk, give kong one more film, and greenlight like 10 more godzilla films.
