Last year, some toy images leaked online which appeared to confirm plans for Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. Weirdly, the merch showed a fully robotic Godzilla, and one who was seemingly being augmented with technology, and last night's action-packed trailer may have shown at least one of them in action!
As you can see below, we first see what appears to be a robotic Godzilla rampaging through a city right at the start of the trailer. Later, Ren Serizawa (Shun Oguri), the son of Ishirō Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), is shown standing in front of a display which clearly features Mechagodzilla (unless we're being trolled).
So, what exactly is going on here?
Godzilla: King of the Monsters teased plans for Mecha-King Ghidorah, so it's feasible that a robotic Godzilla has also been created, and is terrorising cities across the globe. That could be what leads to Monarch deciding to send Kong after him, only for it to be revealed as the fight continues that this Godzilla is more machine than monster (leading to the real deal returning a little later on).
Kong might also injure Godzilla enough that he needs cybernetic upgrades, though we're fully anticipating the two monsters teaming up to take on Mecha-King Ghidorah whatever happens.
One thing we can safely say is that this franchise is now fully embracing its sci-fi roots...
