GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Projected To Drop A Disasterous 70% On Its Second Weekend

Following the disappointment that was Godzilla: King of the Monsters' opening weekend, there is more in store for the kanji-fest. For its second weekend, the sequel is looking at a gargantuan drop . . .

There is much to blame for Godzilla: King of the Monsters' underwhelming opening weekend, in fact there are so many, it would be hard to blame just one. May proved to be crowded, and the competition with Aladdin, Avengers: Endgame, Detective Pikachu and Rocketman proved to be unbenefitial to the Legendary studios movie. But at the end of the day, the studio was still holding on to hope, anticipating decent holds throughout the next few months.

Unfortunately, instead of good news analysts are spelling out more trouble for the monster, with a likely 70% drop projected for the weekend. The sequel opened to $47 million last weekend, so a 70% drop would bring its second weekend down to $14 million. At this rate, the film will likely lose money for the studio, which is currently busy in post-production for the series' next installment, Godzilla vs. Kong

Reviews being this toxic hurt it too. I dug the trailers, but all the critics I trust straight up hated it.

@tmp3 - The reviews were no more toxic than the ones Venom received so I don't think we keep letting these studios use that as an excuse. Also remember it was tracking in the mid $50M range 3 months before these reviews came out and even the audience that did see it weren't into it with that B+ Cinemascore.

tmp3 - 6/8/2019, 3:25 PM
@LongMayHeReign - Tracking was low so this needed good reviews. I was on the fence and I ended up not seeing it because it sounded like a dud, and I'm sure a lot of other people decided to skip too. Maybe they shouldn't have made a shitty movie if they didn't want a sequel to a film audiences didn't like (2x multiplier) to bomb.

LongMayHeReign - 6/8/2019, 3:42 PM
@tmp3 - Tracking for Venom was low to remember ($60M as of September), but it still beat expectations and opened with $80M despite the reviews. We just can't use that as an excuse anymore.

tmp3 - 6/8/2019, 3:49 PM
@LongMayHeReign - $60m for a $100m film isn't low tracking, and Venom is the outlier not the norm for poorly reviewed films doing well.

That's too bad. The international numbers will still get a small contribution from me when I finally manage to go next week.

The summer box office outside of Disney and John Wick:

@WakandanQueen - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood should make a lot of money for Sony. $200m domestic?
MiB will be a big L for them though. Over/under $25m Opening Weekend.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 6/8/2019, 3:17 PM
@tmp3 - No Tarantino film has ever made this much, so IDK.
I think MiB will actually do okay.

4thMaster - 6/8/2019, 3:20 PM
@WakandanQueen - Accurate, I expect even Disney will feel some of that fire with their next 3 movies releasing so close together.
tmp3
tmp3 - 6/8/2019, 3:22 PM
@WakandanQueen - Django did $184m adjusted for inflation and DiCaprio's the only actor working who can sell a movie on his name alone (Revenant did $184m domestic, Gatsby did $155m dom even with mixed/bad reviews). It's also the only big film this summer aimed at adults who aren't into genre fair, so that market would be starved by the time it opens.
MiB's pre-sales... aren't painting a pretty picture. Hemsworth's films outside of the MCU keep bombing.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 6/8/2019, 3:24 PM
@8thDoctor - They actually only have Toy Story 4 and The Lion King for the rest of the Summer and they are opening a month apart from each other. The former is selling tickets like crazy and the latter should easily be one of the year's biggest films.

4thMaster - 6/8/2019, 3:27 PM
@WakandanQueen - You're not counting Spider-Man 2 releasing at the start of July.

@8thDoctor - Because that's a Sony film.

It's actually a really good movie, but yeah the competition is way too strong. Should've released it at a better time and it would have made much more money.

@Kevwebsz - Endgame isn't topping Avatar. At best it'll be $30m behind.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 6/8/2019, 3:23 PM
@Kevwebsz - Endgame should hit $2.73B by Monday, it'll beat Avatar original box office run (prior to the re release) but looks like it will need a re release of it's own to topple it outright. Unless it gets a serious bump by Far From Home.

Darn. I thought it was a great film. Nice fan service. Good action and special effects. I hope they don't give up on this franchise.

Came here to say they’re pushing back Godzilla vs Kong to a later release date after warner bros announced something on twitter but this is just depressing...

I still don’t understand why they didn’t hold the March release date. Sure it would’ve gone up against capt marvel and eventually avengers but that was literally it! Yes it would’ve still received negativity from critics but it would’ve been different then a super hero film and early in the year so it wouldn’t have had the too many movie effect going on. Instead warner bros got cocky and decided to release Shazam to take on cm so a far less glamorized super hero took on marvel at a time when there were really only cbm movies out. It just pisses me off but then again maybe it was doomed from the start...

@TheRadioDemon - "Sure it would’ve gone up against capt marvel and eventually avengers but that was literally it!"

That's all it takes man, with the amount of money that was spent by people on Captain Marvel and Endgame in pre sales alone there's no way people would also shell out dollars for Godzilla. In fact the be frank it probably would have done worse, it would have released the same day as US and the hype for that was pretty big.
EZBeast
EZBeast - 6/8/2019, 4:21 PM
@LongMayHeReign - doubtful it was a superhero dominated market at the time and adding something different and using Shazam to clean up now when Godzilla came out would’ve probably done better.

No way to ever know but there were just too many different kinds of blockbusters coming out where Godzilla would’ve only had superheroes to compete with
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 6/8/2019, 4:30 PM
@TheRadioDemon - If Shazam came out now it would also have been the same or worse. It would have been surrounded by 3 family centric films (of which Shazam plays more as) and one of them is a big Disney blockbuster prior to it's release followed by SLOP and the an even bigger Disney animated blockbuster. Shazam would have gotten wrecked in this slot.

So I saw the movie in IMAX ON Wednesday. Probably my first IMAX of any movie ever. The played commercials of the IMAX experience and I felt like Captain Maerica in space for the first time with my eyes going wide. That said huge screaning with like 10 people in their including me. The surround sound nearly killed my ears it was waaaay to loud. With that said movie was ok. Wish the fights took place more in the day like Skull Island.

Dark Phoenix potentially going for a $35M domestic opening. Ouch. Not the way this franchise deserved to go out, but it seems they earned it.

The Kaiju scenes were awesome, but I get why it's bombing. Ther general Audience just don't have a passion for Kaiju.
