GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Projected To Finish Box Office Run Well Below KONG: SKULL ISLAND

What's in store for the future of WB's Monsterverse, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently projected to finish more than $150+ million below the final worldwide gross of 2017's Kong: Skull Island.

It's a good thing that Godzilla vs Kong has already wrapped filming, because the current box office tally for Godzilla: King of the Monsters are the type of numbers that lead to studio execs tweaking scripts or outright canceling projects.

The film is headed for a $400 million worldwide haul from a production budget of $170 million. The 2014 Godzilla reboot grossed $529 million, while Kong: Skull Island finished its theaterical run at $566.6 million. King of the Monsters also debuted to the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of all three MonsterVerse films at 40% (2014 Godzilla and Skull Island both scored 75%).

With Godzilla vs Kong wrapped, how the disappointing box office numbers will alter WB's plans for the film and the MonsterVerse as a whole moving forwards remains to be seen.

@tmp3 - I kind of hope not. Movie's like this makes me want to see it in the big screen.

@Sickness1985 - I was kidding, they can't do it even if they wanted to due to their contract with Toho.

@tmp3 - There is so little incentive for these media companies to release these movies straight to streaming. They get some amount of money for the theatrical release and then they are still the official streaming home of the movie which in and of itself is a draw for the service. That’s why all the press releases for Disney+ have touted Endgame, Rise of Skywalker and Captain Marvel in addition to the original content.

This is embarrassing. And also quite sad. I enjoyed the film.

Agree, this movie is the best USA kaiju movie. Sadly the critics successfully created a hate campaign to discourage viewers from buying a ticket. This movie is not a 27% rotten film.

It’s such a strange time for movies. It seems like only CBMs make money (Marve and Aquamanl) and there will be that one random surprise with all the other big budget flicks barely making a dent. Pikachu and Godzilla should have been hits on paper but it seems the landscape for these type of movies is a crapshoot.

@CBMFilmJunkie - I think a Pokemon movie would been more popular maybe 7 to 10 years ago I could be wrong

@Sickness1985 - I think a Pokemon movie would have been more popular with human characters that people recognise - Ash, Misty, Brock, Oak, Team Rocket etc...

@CBMFilmJunkie - I knew the Pokemon movie wouldn't be too successful.

First off it aint the 90's anymore and they used an obscure property, detective pickachu, most pokemon fans don't give a shit about.

If they used Ash or heck even Red. The movie might have been a mega hit on nostalgia alone.

@CBMFilmJunkie - Dude I was thinking the exact same thing. How on earth are so many movies doing so badly? It’s not good that the only movies doing numbers are Marvel and some of the other cbm’s

You'd think something like Godzilla would dominate overseas. Yikes.

@KWilly - Exactly, people say the critics ruined it's earning potential but it wasn't even that hot in Godzilla's home region. It only made $5M more than the first Ant-man in China, and made less in Japan than Godzilla (2014).

Everybody says the movie was great but the audience doesn't seem to agree.
